Jeff Coldwell (Antler Quest)

We used him last year, he was spot on, well worth it for people that live a long way from the unit.

ANTLER FEVER? DROVE COLORADO RESIDENT TO POACHING

Jeff Coldwell, 43, of Firestone, Colorado recently pled guilty to poaching charges

In May of 2006, Jeff Coldwell pleaded guilty to illegal possession of three or more deer in Weld County. In addition to the loss of the illegally taken wildlife, he forfeited his muzzleloader and the court fined him $7,500 with 36 months probation. Coldwell also pled guilty to abuse of public records in Adams County and received a 2 year deferred sentence for false statements made regarding a bear license. The courts donated a portion of his fine to Operation Game Thief.

The abuses also led the Colorado Wildlife Commission to suspend Coldwell?s privilege of applying for, purchasing, or exercising the benefits conferred by all DOW licenses for 20 years. His license privileges are also suspended in 22 Wildlife Violator Compact states.

It all began with a hunch. Wildlife Officer Windi Padia contacted Jeff Coldwell while on ATV patrol in Game Management Unit 20 during the 2005 muzzleloader season. Coldwell had a muzzleloader, but no hunting license in his possession. Noticing a clump of deer hair near his truck, Padia inquired further, but Coldwell denied taking a deer. Coldwell was visibly nervous throughout the contact and told Padia he had been hunting with a family member who had a deer license for GMU 18, about seven miles to the west and over the Continental Divide. After checking the records for Coldwell?s license, Officer Padia found that it was valid for GMU 20 only.

Additional Wildlife Officers, Aimee Ryel and John Koehler, were engaged to conduct interviews in Coldwell?s hometown, whereupon he admitted he had taken a large mule deer buck illegally in GMU 18 and had already transported the cape out of the unit by backpack. Another deer was shot by the licensed family member and both animals were left to rot. Officers hiked to the kill site and located the trophy-quality skinned buck, as well as a quartered buck. The meat was only salvageable on one of the animals.

Now, the full arm of the law reached in--a search warrant was obtained for Coldwell?s residence yielding evidence that Coldwell used another family member's license to tag a buck in 2000. Padia seized Coldwell?s computer and found further evidence of a wildlife violation--emails from Coldwell showed that he had gone bear hunting in 2005 and finding that people were camped near his hunting spot, promptly told a representative from the DOW that he was not able to go on his bear hunt due to medical issues. Six bear preference points were reinstated to Coldwell based on his statements. This fraudulent activity led Officer Padia to charge him with abuse of public records. After disposition of the case in Adams County, his bear preference points were revoked.

In connection with the case, two members of Jeff Coldwell?s family have received citations for wildlife violations and have chosen to pay their fines.

One poaching leads to proof of another

Evidence also seized from Coldwell?s computer revealed information from a 2003 Trophy Hunter magazine article depicting Coldwell in Fox Park, also in GMU 18, with a harvested buck. This evidence prompted Officer Padia to obtain another search warrant for his residence. The buck in question was seized and it was determined that Coldwell poached it in 2003 in GMU 18 during muzzleloader season. He did not have a license for GMU 18 that year.

?Transferring licenses, a form of ?party hunting?, has severely negative impacts on our wildlife,? said Officer Windi Padia. ?Hunting opportunities are regulated for a reason?any additional opportunity created by a poacher is one less opportunity for an ethical hunter. Everyone who values our wildlife should know that poaching doesn't pay.?

>Isn't this guy a convicted Poacher?

True story and we debated that before using him. He did commit some crimes and was sentenced by the court and is paying the price for it. He clearly loves the outdoors and big mule deer and knows how and where to find them. I didn't see a problem paying him for scouting services. For us it was less than 1/2 the cost of a weekend of scouting ourselves with travel costs. We did that as well, but the information was well worth what we paid for it.

That said we both still ate our tags - ha!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-26-17 AT 08:22PM (MST)[p]I'll go to bat for Jeff. He made a mistake and is paying his dues. That being said, we have used Jeff and Antler Quest several times and his info is spot on! We have harvested several bomber bucks because of his scouting package. We will use him again this year if we draw or buy a voucher.

Found guilty of poaching in 2006 which led to another poaching violation that happened in 2003. How many others were there that they didn't get him on?

If he hadn't been caught, would he still be doing it? "He's paying his dues".....only because he got caught.

We all know right from wrong...antler fever?? OMG... the antlers made me do it. LOL

Yep, its amazing how many poachers get defended on this site. Can't believe people would pay money to someone who has multiple infractions. Also can't believe a convicted poacher can have a scouting service.

I like the above comment about making " a mistake ". Sounds like more than one to me and who knows how many more. Maybe he has a learning disability ? Certainly someone I don't care to have any association with.

No one is defending the poaching.

I guess I do not understand how us paying him for scouting services is wrong.

Would you pay Bernie Madoff for investment advice? Plenty of reputable scouting services available that don't employ convicted poachers

He was a social media posting poacher before it was cool.

It's really up to each individual what businesses they want to support. Personally I wouldn't pay my hard earned money to an individual that has admitted to and been convicted of premeditated and willful poaching of three of my favorite animals (that we know about) in fairly recent history (not like he was a dumb kid back then), and is barred from hunting in the state he's scouting for people in. To me shooting the biggest buck in the unit is not worth sacrificing my values and I'd rather eat tag soup than pay for his scouting services.

I don't blame him for running AQ and if others don't have a problem with paying him that's their choice.

He's apparently giving good information judging by all the Monster Muleys members and Huntin' Fool guys posing with giant bucks on his website.

Would you pay a convicted sex offender to babysit your kids because he already paid his dues?

Would you rent your house to a convicted meth manufacturer because he paid his dues in prison already?

Better yet, would you let a convicted wife beater date your daughter?

Sheesh.

I can't believe a convicted poacher would make the choice to earn a living by operating a scouting service. Its like a reformed alcoholic working as a bartender, just not a good idea

Really? Would you let your mother borrow your car when she was cited for doing 100mph in her truck ten years ago? Maybe she spent the night in the local jail and paid a couple thousand for her stupidity, I bet she learned her lesson. Oh, did I mention she teaches driver education?

I wouldn't let my mom borrow my truck if she had the scenario you mentioned, YBO. True story....I'd drive her, but not let her take the truck. :)

Quite the comparisons. They relate so well......ha ha (not really)
He finds big bucks and has many happy clients. Must be doing something right, regardless of his past. I'm sure he wishes he could do it over. Can't, so one just moves on I guess.

I thought the example was a bit extreme and over the top. Anyway we all have our opinions and that's what makes life interesting. Buck season can't get here soon enough.

He made "a" mistake?

Poaching multiple bucks and leaving them to rot (2005) is not "a" mistake;

Lying to the DOW about his illness so he could get his Bear points back (2005) is not "a" mistake;

Poaching another buck (2003) is not "a" mistake;

Party hunting in Colorado (2000) is not "a" mistake.

Do you guys actually believe these were one-time incidents?

This guy is a serial game law violator. How many crimes did he get away with, and for how long?

Does the name Kirt Darner ring a bell with anyone here?

That's why I'm so giddy about this coming fall. When a 300" cast it's shed in your unit you hyperventilate for 9 months.

Yep more than likely since he is on private. You must know about such a creature?

Yep he broke the law....paid the price. But to compare him to a sex offender or abuser?
It is nice to know where your values are or lack of. Personally i value the human being treat each other rather than comparing a sex offender to a poacher. But thats me. Go hug a deer

Im With Wizard on this one. Sounds like the guy has made more than a few mistakes... And those are only the ones he was caught on. And "leaving the meat to rot"? That's the ultimate and that's not a mistake that's a decision.
We all love the outdoors and chasing big bucks, but this type of behavior will ruin it for everyone

There's a guy on this thread who asked me to help out finding an elk for his son on a late season hunt. I asked if his son's license was good on public land, he said yes. I checked it out and it was PLO. He asked if we could "fudge that" a little. End of story,.
