Elk for Dad

My Dad is getting up there in age (70) and he has not killed a bull elk. He doesn't buy points so he has nothing "going" for him in regards to an opportunity to draw an elk tag. He can still get around very well and I am thinking about paying for an OTC elk tag for him next year so he can kill one...or at least give it our best shot at it. I know I'll need to do some research but can anyone point me in the right direction in regards to a good unit to hunt for a possibility to kill an elk? Any help would be appreciated. Pm's are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Steve

Yes..my Dad is not picky. I'm 45 and I blame him for me not having a buck that scores higher than 160. :) We are freezer fillers not trophy hunters.

If you want an excellent guided over the counter hunt PM me. They may be booked full already. The cost is $6,000. This is where my son and I will be going on my last elk hunt. I am 74.

littlebull- spending that kind of $$ is not an option for us. I appreciate the info, though. I wish you and your son the best of luck. I'm sure your son appreciates everything you have done for him.

Wiszard, Not to push you away from my home state, I love it here. But have you looked at potentially putting him in the draw for Idaho or New Mexico? Draw odds are long, but they do not use preference points in those states. You could apply him for some middle of the road type units (not the best, not the worst)and have a real chance of getting him a tag within the next couple of years. The Idaho deadline hasn't closed yet this year.

Over the counter elk in Colorado is certainly doable, I do it most every year. But you are going to see people. There are some darn good honey holes in OTC units, but most people have spent a long time tracking them down and are fairly tight lipped about them. Just a suggestion. Take it for what it's worth. Not to dissuade you from Colorado OTC, but I think in your situation you may be able to find a little higher quality hunt for him in those draws. Worth looking into at least.

I think if you just want the experience, go for DIY OTC. If you really want to get him an elk with one shot at it, research some DIY trespass hunts.

I'm going to second the suggestion about a DIY trespass hunt. Tons of guys kill bulls on OTC public land hunts and it's very do-able, but you can up your odds a bit by paying to get on a good ranch. Try the Craig Chamber of Commerce for leads. Drop camps are another middle of the road compromise. Most outfitters offer them.

arrowslinger- I hear what you are saying about CO OTC tags. The issue with the draw is that I don't think my Dad has many years left to hunt elk. We've already talked about it and we will be heading to CO next year for an OTC elk hunt. I do appreciate your advice though.

I will be calling the Chamber of Commerce in Craig to find out about DIY trespass fee hunts. That definitely seems worth paying a bit of $$ for. Thanks for the help guys.

Craig Chamber of Commerce has a website with listings. You don't have to call. Other towns also have that info on their websites.
