I Drew Unit 44!! A PP Perspective

I have went and used my 23 PP for deer and drew Unit 44 4th season and it had me thinking a bit.

I am now 60 Years old, so I was 36 Years old when I started this venture(I was 3 x the shape I am now, not saying I am bad shape but does not compare to a 36 year old.)

My 23 year old son was not born

My 27 year old daughter was 3 years old

I was 6 years into my carrier and now I am trying to figure out how to retire.

Anyway something should probably be changed the PP game(maybe after I use my Elk points).

Anyway been running and going to the gym since I put in back in April, as I have read this unit is not a slam dunk but I am going to do as much research, shoot as much as I can and get in the best shape I can and from there I going to enjoy this hunt.

Take Care

Pray for some snow and you can do well without being in 36 year old shape!

For a 4th season hunt like this, there is no way they can improve on how long it takes: supply an demand. Even a hybrid type of drawing could give you the chance to NEVER draw it. "So your saying there's a chance??"

Lots of good deer hunting out there without holding out for a primo tag. Hope you hunted some in those years. If not, you really missed out. I haven't missed a year in Colorado in over 20 years. Mostly elk with a few deer hunts thrown in.

Congratulations on a great tag. I also used a lot of points, not as many as you, for a 3rd season tag in Unit 10. I'm doing it because I want a fun uncrowded hunt, and also to learn the unit better for a potential elk hunt.

I actually like the Colorado system. Where else can you hunt virtually every year while building points. It's not like you actually have to wait all that time to get a tag. I also like having a really good idea when you will draw. It makes it much easier to plan your hunt.

All the states have some good and bad points to their systems.

Good luck on you hunt!

MDNDEER,
I should be in the unit scouting, as I'm hopeful to draw in the near future. If you would like any help or info on what we are seeing let me know.

That's a really good tag. There are big bucks in that unit and hunting them when they're rutting makes them a LOT easier to get, and they'll probably be on the winter range. Fun hunt! Lots of pressure I'll bet when you've waited 23 years.
What caliber of buck are you holding out for?

I hope you've gotten to do a lot of Deer hunting elsewhere, while you wait!

The biggest typical Mule Deer I have ever laid eyes on, was directly south of Eagle, in 44, in November. He is the only typical that I have ever seen that I KNOW, was over 200". If that were my tag, I would go a week before the hunt to scout, and hunt it right out to the last day.

GOOD LUCK and please share a report after the hunt!

Congratulations on drawing. Should be some busters left there, as last year was mild w low success, and winter was not as bad as elsewhere. Many of the biggest bucks in CO have come from that gene pool.

mdndeer. congradulations !!! I blew my points (16) on a different 4th season hunt this year. Figured I wouldn't draw 44-4th with only 16. I hope you keep us all posted on your hunt and share some pics. Good Luck!

LAST EDITED ON May-19-17 AT 09:00AM (MST)[p]Perspective.................

23 years ago there was no 4th season at all. Unit 44 had only been draw for 2 years or so, 3rd season 44 was still a fairly easy draw. Founder hadn't pulled it out of his #&$& yet in the great blizzard of 2002 and opened up the Uturd flood gates. Hunting Fool hadn't blown 44 out of the water. The winter of 2007-2008 wasn?t a blip on the radar. The giant subdivision in the valley slamming up against the winter range wasn?t even a thought????

If you sat at home every year waiting for this tag, you surely missed an opportunity at a buck at least as good as you're likely to shoot now, without the pressure of good weather and 5 measly days to hunt.

Nothing wrong with the PP system??????

LAST EDITED ON May-19-17 AT 10:05AM (MST)[p]Well, we all should have been that prescient 10 years ago, right? If I knew then what I know now (or had been paying attention), I would have burned my points and started over again. But it didn't work out that way for me, or the OP, so now we're making the best of it. That's the way it goes.

Appreciate all the reply's and here's a few answers to your questions.

Yes I have been hunting and not just waiting for point(been elk hunting and buying landowner tags in 421?)

What size deer? I have not shot anything real big, so if it gets close to 180 it's in trouble.

I am not saying I don't like the PP system because like a few have said you can plan a hunt, just looking on how long it takes.

Appreciate the offers for help and will probable PM a couple of you but first I want to buy some maps and take a good look before I start talking.

And yes I will post picture if I get lucky.

I do plan on arriving 5 days early so I can scout.

Again understand its not a guarantee but plan to go and have a hunt of my lifetime(I hope)

180 is the class of buck you should be passing... if conditions are right 190 minimum. Scouting will help in the sense of learning the country and roads. Bucks will be very nomadic during November and will constantly be on the move. So finding a buck a couple days before the season and trying to keep tabs on him can be down right impossible. Along with new deer will appear daily in drainages you thought you had things accounted for. Two years ago I spent 3 days straight in the same 2 drainaged and seen different bucks each day. Which means a guys got to sh#t or get off the pot when it comes to deciding whether to pull the trigger on a 5 day hunt.

Congratulations to you! Good luck! As a NR with only 2 pts, it pumps me up to hear guys saying pass up 180s. Just have fun and be safe!

Anyone know how many points it took to draw 44 3rd season? I had 20 points as a NR and did NOT draw. Damn

Y B O. Sorry to hear that I expected you to say you drew for sure. I remember only about 10 years ago when a nonresident could draw that with five points. I also I have been chasing 44/3 but at the rate it's going I will probably get too old to hunt before I draw. hang in there you will eventually get it

Thanks buckhorn. Just think about 10 years ago I purchased a 4th season 44 LO tag for $3,000. Crazy

Are you still buying them? Have you taken any good Bucls out of 44?

There are not tons of bucks there. I hunted with 2 friends that grew up on ranches in the area and I felt fortunate to shoot a 179" deer on the last day. I saw larger just didn't see the giant that I was looking for.

It was discouraging watch guys with 4-6 others out scouting and to see the rat patrol go screaming by when they were either changing areas or going to take a good luck at a buck.

Good Luck

The first time I hunted unit 44 3rd season was 1985. It was an over the counter tag. I hunted every year till they went to a draw. Then I hunted it every 3rd year. The last time I hunted unit 44 3rd season was 2004. I have been saving points ever since. However I just cashed out my 13 points on unit 3 4th season. This is a private ranch that holds some big bucks. I helped my daughter and son-in-law in 2016 hunt this ranch 3rd season and they killed a couple of stud bucks the first day of the hunt. This year my wife, daughter and son-in-law have 3rd season tags and I have a 4th season tag. I will be the only deer hunter on the ranch. Good luck in 44. By the way I have seen 1st hand what monster bucks unit 44 has had.

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

180??? Holy smokes you can hunt 180 for a point or two (and get them regularly too) Hold out and enjoy it man, and do what coloboy said, find a few good places and just keep watching the rut is a very fluid thing, especially if it is continuing to build snow during the hunt, as deer flood in from (they only know) where.

It's a great show, relax and enjoy it, and remember the tag tastes almost as good as they do at that time of year.
