How high for deer?

I should have a second season rifle deer tag on the Mesa, first time in that area during that season, are the deer likely still up high, especially given the trend towards warm falls.

Which unit?

I haven't really seen that much deer on the Mesa...unless it was right around the towns of Mesa, Colbran, Molina and never up high.

I see most of em in oak-brush and PJs.

Been looking at 521 mainly, hunted elk during archery back in the 90's above Cedaredge and saw a couple nice bucks in the timber. Just wondered if all the elk hunters along with seemingly warmer temps in the fall would keep some deer up higher and out of town and off private during the second season.

There are always some great deer up in the timber but they are hard to kill. You have to be quick to the trigger to get a shot in the timber before they disappear. I would focus on the aspen and oak country. Glassing can be tough so you will probably have to cover some ground. There are resident deer in the lower country that will never leave but there are plenty of deer to hunt in the higher elevations.

I use to rifle hunt in 421 on the mesa up high during second rifle. I never had a deer tag myself but most in our camp did and it was very common for a couple guys to tag out on deer. That being said, you can find them through all the zones from top to bottom.

Like others said the deer near town seldom venture out. I would focus from the scrub oak through the aspens up into the pines. Most deer we saw were at the aspen/pine transitions
