is pt creep turning into pt jump?

just looked up the results from the draws. I drew both my elk and mule deer tags but it turned out to not be the slam dunk I thought it was. My elk tag went from 100% with 8 pts to 50% with 10 pts ( I had 11). The deer hunt is for a unit that in 2015 had 60% odds with 3 pts to this year it was 51% with 6 pts. I had 7 pts for that hunt and kinda felt like I was wasting a few pts going into the draw. Thankful I decided to burn the pts when I did and looking forward to two great hunts.

After spending some time looking over the 2017 draw results it sure seems that way. I noticed several units that jumped by more than a couple points. I sure wish they could find a way to help slow this problem but I guess it is a simple equation of the demand is way higher than the supply of quality tags.

Maybe we've hit the demand point where we need to cut back on the number of so-called trophy GMU's and make the state about opportunity?

I'd rather deer hunt every year than limit my hunting to every few years just so we can increase age class.

Are you kidding me? Colorado offers more opportunity to both residents and non-residents than most other states.
OTC elk and 0 point deer units(where you can take trophy class bucks) are 2 examples of the opportunity CO provides.

What we lack is enough trophy units to satisfy the hunter demand for those opportunities.(specifically elk)

You can hunt deer every year in CO if your not tied to a specific unit.

The last thing we need is a model like Utah where buck/doe ratios are so low that people shoot the first buck they see. CO doesn't manage for age class (like UT LE elk units), they are managed for a population objective and a set buck/doe ratio.

I actually wish that they would take a few more units and make them LE for Elk, and try to ease the logjam of only a very few really good elk hunts in the state.

As far as Deer, there are PLENTY of units around the state, with decent deer hunting that you can hunt every year, if you want to. I, personally commend CPW for how they manage our deer, after having hunted, NM, Idaho, Wyoming etc. We have it pretty decent here in Co.

What needs to be done is;
- reallocated Res/Non Res quota to be more inline with other states 75/25 or 80/20 would still be better than other states.
-modify the preference point system. I wouldn't mind something like Nevada's where increased points held increases your chances of drawing but low point holders at least hold a chance.

I actually like having different systems for all the states. I view CO as lots of elk but very few units with big bulls and yet good to great deer hunting. I do have to seriously question building elk points again though. I hunted OTC units for 10 years and had fun learning to hunt elk. I then found great hunts in NM and MT and have 8-10 pts in several other states. I know I'll get an AZ, UT, NV bull tag where I can chase upper end bulls. My unit 40 tag will be a good hunt but I'm not expecting to harvest a 340-350+ bull just a good 300+. I just can't see building points knowing I might not even catch back up to unit 40 and that's mainly private. Colorado is what is, very few units for trophy bulls but a great place to know you can chase deer and elk each year. I'll use the other states to hold out for potentially bigger animals. Between all the states and different point systems it allows a person to do some short, medium, and long term planning.

I agree that point creep isn't fun. But it is nice to reward those that have saved up points,in the fact that they get the tag first. For a low point holder in UT, I like the fact that I always have a chance to draw, albeit very low. But for those that have been putting in for years, it cheats them. I have known kids that have no points draw once in a lifetime hunts in UT and yet there are people with max points and near retiring from hunting that won't draw.

I like how CO does it. Fair enough, and opportunity if you really want it. Also, you can put in for multiple species. UT residents are only allowed to put in for one - either LE deer or LE elk or LE pronghorn. UT's point creep is only going to get worse faster than CO's.

I am not complaining, I got a deer and pronghorn tag in CO this year. :) I also put in for a few states, hoping to be hunting something each year.

Residents shot theirselves in the foot when they defeated the increase in residents hunting fees. That was your only chance to get NR % of tags reduced. And if you think you are going to get them to reduce the budget AND can give residents more tags, good luck with that one........

Not all units had a jump in points required to draw. Some units were slightly easier to draw this year. But if your chasing the "trophy" units, creep or a "jump" will most likely continue. With the exception of some deer tags probably seeing a small drop off in years 2019 and 2020.

The draw is a management tool, that in many units, is not to control/limit the wildlife population but to control/limit the number of hunters.

Im curious to know how many pts 61 3rd deer took (i know someone who didnt draw with 12) where last year there was a 20 percent with 11...

Also curious what it took in 68 3rd deer...

Would love to know how many...maybe there is a way to look.
