I am looking to fly down to the Durango area from Washington state. in August to do some deer scouting. What would be the best / easiest airport to fly into? Albuquerque, NM? Or is there someplace better?

Thanks
Craig

Durango is the best place to fly into. They have a nice airport that operates year round. If you hurry, you might get a decent price. Second choice would be Cortez, but your flights and times there are more limited and usually more expensive. Doesn't hurt to check though. It is only about 45 minutes from Durango. Third choice is Albuquerque which is about 4 hours from Durango, 5 from Silverton. It is normally the cheapest.

Interesting story about flying out of Durango. I had just gotten to Colorado to hunt in September and a friend died. I made a reservation on Friday to fly Saturday (the next day). Round trip was $238! Was astounded that it was so low. The day I flew, the Durango and Denver airports were both very uncrowded and the planes were not near full. Then I realized the date: 9/11

Durango airport (DRO) has 6-7 daily flights from DEN on United and 2-3 each per day from PHX and DFW on American. No reason to look elsewhere unless the savings are extremely drastic.

Unless you can fly direct to ABQ it sounds like you'd be connecting anyway.

ABQ is 4 hours (more or less) and an easy drive.

Don't ride the train. Rent a Jeep instead and drive the passes.
