LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-17 AT 04:44PM (MST)[p]I've got a 3rd season deer tag for 551 and was hoping someone may have some experience in this area? Looking for some general areas worth looking over. I may try to make a trip out from Oklahoma this summer to get eyes on before season starts. Would love to find some areas where I may be able to get away from the road hunters? Please feel free to PM me! Thanks in advance for any tips!
 
I hunted 551 the year before the big winter kill of '07--'08 & I would have to consult my maps on the areas I hunted & where I saw the deer exactly. I have not been back to the unit because of the huge losses that winter . I do not know the relevance of my hunting there since it was so long ago. I got all my directions from the area biologist in Gunnison. He was very helpful & was very experienced in that area. I could not find the monster buck I sought so I ate tag soup that season. 200 cow hunters 3rd. Lowest in a long time
350 to 400 OTC bull hunters average.

10 doe tags 1 is PLO only
10 buck tags 1 is PLO only.

Lowest hunter density ever...
Lower deer density due to winters and poor fawn recruitment. (multiple) reasons.
Is it worth the 10 or 11 PP you used to get it??
Hell Yea.
