Unit 61 3rd season deer

For better or worse, I cashed in the points on this hunt this year. Plan to hunt more often and not bank points in the future.

I've been on & around the unit a bit, but never hunted it. I've read the forum posts about it which have been very helpful. I was down there last year looking around at the end of the hunt, looked like the weather made for a tough hunt.

If anyone has any recent experience or advice on the hunt, I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Guy

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-17 AT 08:25AM (MST)[p]I think you drew on a good year to hunt the unit. There was good moisture last winter and horn growth got off to a great start. Last weeks rain came just soon enough to help things finish off well. In my opinion the deer are starting to come back since the study is over and lions are being harvested more regularly. I feel there will be a few bucks over 200" taken off the unit this year. Weather will be the biggest factor in knowing where to hunt. If you are limited on scouting days I would recommend using them right before season rather than in the summer. There are big bucks but it can be a tuff hunt. I would have a hard time walking away from a legit 175-180 unless you are prepared to eat tag soup. There are deer worth holding out for.
Here are a few bucks I would call good representation of the unit but not the biggest on the mtn.

JT, thanks for the comments. You have me chomping at the bit for November!

Glad to hear you're getting some moisture in the area. I expect I'll get over there to do some scouting a couple times before the hunt & then again just prior. I'm already doing my snow dance - not that it ever works...

My hunting style has kept me on a steady diet of tag soup ;)

Thanks again,

Guy

Myself and two hunting buddies cashed in our points also to hunt 61 3rd season. I like hearing about the moisture and horn growth. I know last year was hot and hard hunting, which should mean several bigger bucks made it through the seasons last year for us this year. Hoping for some early winter storms to start the migration/rutting. It will be a great time. WE will be over in Colorado a few days early and will stay to the end of the hunt. You never know what will show it's self as the hunt go's on and the rut get's going. Best of luck to you!!!

Thanks Rick. I had the same thought after being out there last year - lot of older bucks had to make it through the hunt. I just hope we don't have the same weather this year - the hunters I talked to were severely depressed. I only saw 3 - 22" bucks taken.

Good luck - seems likely our paths will cross out there!
