Anyone have any info for elk in GMU 85, between Walsenburg and Gardner. Just some general ideas what to expect for black powder season. Looking at maps, it seems water is scarce. Thanks

Hunting public lands? That narrows it WAY down.

Awesome unit with a large elk herd and some great bulls in there. But it is a unit with mostly private and a lot of small parcels in there. I have been lucky enough to hunt on a few of them and wish could hunt there more, but a tough one for public DIY.

To your question, in the higher elevation areas there are water holes and seeps and since it is a unit without really high elevation and therefore warmer temps, the elk will be hitting/near those water sources in that time of year.

Spanish Peaks, Sangre De Cristos, this unit definitely has public land above timberline. When I ML hunted 85, I parked and camped @ 11.7K. and saw elk higher than that.

Have access to some private land but mostly will be hunting public.

Thanks for the inof. I believe the majority of the area we have access to is around 7,000 ft. Have some access to private but the majority will be public.
