A good friend and I are trying to find a solid unit for an OTC 3rd season colorado hunt. We have looked into several and 74 looks like it's rough and has some elk. We are not looking for trophies. We would like the opportunity at a decent bull. Would any body be willing to share some information on 74 or a unit they would suggest to us? Not looking for people to share their secrets we just need to get started in the right direction. Pm would be great if you would prefer. Thank you in advance.

Third season is pretty tough to get a bull. By then the rut is over and they have been archery, muzzy, 1st and second rifle hunted! If you get some weather, you can do well, but otherwise the bulls are off by themselves in the nastiest hell holes out there. So an average year would be about 10-12% in 74 for 3rd season.

You might try and get a cow tag from the leftover list. Good way to get your feet wet and learn the country, and most times, there are higher success rates for cows. And the tag costs less! I would do some research on toprut to see where there might be some leftovers and success rates of different units.

Just curious how your muzzy hunt went in 74? I have a few points and was thinking about trying that. Hunted 74 a few years ago on the 1st rifle season.

We were 1 for 2 on my first trip, but the friend who took us (from Durango) had a heart attack on the trip so it was cut short. I traveled the Durango/Silverton hwy at 80 mph to get him to the hospital and he had bypass surgery and he is still hunting there!

We had horses for that hunt and most of the elk we got in to were 2-4 miles from the trailhead.

Have personally hunted the area 2 other times in muzzy season and killed 2 cows. 1 was in 74 about a mile from the road and one was in 75 200 yards above a jeep road. That one we slid down the mountain whole and quartered her IN the road. But I doubt I will ever hunt either unit in the 2nd or 3rd rifle.
