Would anyone be willing to share any information on unit 75 3rd rifle season for elk? We have access to horses and atvs or both. Any help would be great. We just ordered our tools for this unit.

Have you ever been in this unit? I am certainly not an expert, but have hunted deer there three times. Lots of private land down low. I never saw a live elk while hunting deer there, but once ran into some local elk hunters who had backpacked way back to shoot a couple raghorns......I gotta tell you, those guys must have been hard core to hike that far back, shoot a couple raghorns, and pack it all out....on their backs. Anyways, I am probably not much help, but the locals say you have to go way back for elk. I hunted around Vallecito Lake. I believe there is public access across private land at a couple trailheads along the road from Durango to Ridgefield. It has been quite a while since I've been there......about ten years ago......so things might have changed a bunch. Good luck on your hunt.

Hunting success in 75 is even lower than 74 unless you have someone who has been there in that season before and knows the area. Success on OTC tags have ranged from 6% to 10% over the last 4 years. 42% of the unit is private and many of the elk are down there by the time the 3rd season rolls around. Where do you live?

I like people from Texas...If you are hardcore this unit has a few Elk for you. If you are thinking you will run around glassing from the truck you might want to pick a different unit. This is intimidating terrain. Weather can be a factor. Snow can make it difficult, but so can warm weather.

If you work your azz off, you should have an opportunity at a 300+ bull. Elk are never easy in over the counter units. If they were, everyone would be hunting there.

Best of luck!
