I seen that the encana sold and the guy I talk to that work for them said he didn't know if the new owner was going to let public in to hunt or not does anyone know any more?

Is this a separate area from the shell oil lease? If its the same area, you cannot hunt the shell oil lease any longer, 2015 was the last year.

Not sure if you are talking about something different or not.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-17 AT 06:06AM (MST)[p]Same area Jake. I heard that also. If it is I wouldn't plan on hunting there again. Just like the shell piece. When it's gone, It's gone.

Yes this could be a massive loss to hunters in both 32 and 22. THe property has sold and the CPW is currently attempting to secure a public hunting lease. For now the property is still open, but could close at any time. Any hunters in this area are advised to have a different plan if the area closes.

Sad new. We lost a bunch with the Shell lease. This on is much larger and in some cases way more important.

Found this in the CPW 2017 Northwest Big Game Brochure, page 23, w map of Girls Claims area:

In 1986, the federal government sold thousands of acres of public land in the Piceance/Roan area (GMUs 22 and 32) to energy companies. The agreement required that the companies keep the land open to the public for 20 years. The public access agreement ended in 2006. These parcels, known as the ?Girls Claims?, are now private property. Beyond the thousands of acres that are owned by the companies, these parcels also control access to thousands of acres of public land.
Access to these areas are not guaranteed and may change from year to year based on agreements and changing ownership.
DO NOT ASSUME PRIVATE LANDS REMAIN OPEN EACH YEAR, even if you have hunted there for years. Check signage or verify with landowners prior to hunting in these areas. Make sure you have current maps.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has no control over closed lands. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the BLM or energy companies directly.

Lots of land ownership changes taking place in this area as resource use increases. More is likely in the future so pay close attention to who owns what our potentially receive a nasty trespassing ticket.

Any idea when it will be determined if these areas will be open or closed to hunting? Did the Shell sale cause its properties to close that same year or the next, or how did that all work?

I don't see these lands being closed this year anymore as with Shell it was the following season.

What you might not know is with the shell steal the new owners decided to let the public hunt it one more year. It is up to the company if they choose to or not!!! The fish and game have been talking with them but there is no lease or deal yet! They have been talking for a long time. I mean months. This sale has been going since the early spring. I wouldn't bet on it being open or they might give you a small piece. Still open. You could take that chance if you want.

Yeah the Shell Lease I feel was only open that extra year because they just could not get it shut off fast enough and enough signs up etc. Even after that first year they will had some open. on the edges.

Regardless I took the time to write the new owners. Offering my support and making a heart felt plea for them to keep it open. I have not heard back at all from the company. Not sure if this is a place to be the really squeeky wheel or not. But so far no response from the company.

Just talked with my dad he is hunting on the unc and ran into a guy that works for caerus. He stated that it sounded like it would still remain open for hunting. But those things can change quick, I am going to try to get a hold of JT who just took over the northwest region for CPW and see what he knows

Is there any new information on this?? I know there is a lot of Encana country out there open to hunting at the moment. Would hate to see all that country closed down.
