Out of the blue today I got a call that my son could have a G12 goat tag that was recently turned in. We obviously said we would take the tag!! The only problem is I haven't spent a lot of time in the unit looking for goats.

I live near the unit and plan on scouting this weekend and all of labor day weekend for the Sep 5th opener. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If we had the tag from the regular draw we would have it scouted thoroughly by now but we are happy for the chance regardless.

Get the hunt data map. Best $40 I've spent so far. I'm also hunting G12 this year, 2nd season. PM me and I'll get you my number. I've been up 4x so far looking around. Biggest observation...I'd better be riding my bike a lot more than the 25 miles a day I'm at now! Tough country up there,

PM sent.
We hiked into an area over the weekend and saw a ton of nannies and kids. We did find four billies together. Two of them looked older than the others and had big bodies and "horse" looking heads. I don't know if they are shooters or not. Their horns didn't seem too long but I don't have much experience with goats. We are going to look the three days before the hunt and try to kill the best animal we find. I will load some pics later.

Do older billies hang in groups or were these most likely juveniles?

The goat with the patch of hair hanging on appeared to be the oldest.

Tons of goats in the unit from maroon creek east to castle creek. This unit is not known to produce large goats and is extremely rough. The largest billie I saw last year was on the north side of north maroon peak about a half mile west of where the hiker fell and died... The was another good billy on the len shoemaker ridge and one more on south hayden peak. by bigger I mean 8.5" ish with good mass..... tons of 7.5-8" younger billies

I had an awesome hunt with my son Hunter and best friend Cory Hays. My son was able to harvest this mature billy on opening morning. We watched this billy and another for two days before the hunt. This goat had the best hair of any billy we saw. To get around some cliffs opening morning we hiked to the top of a 13,500 ft peak in the dark and then down 1000' to where we could shoot. Of course the goat decided to move that morning across the basin but we were able to get it done. He took a tumble off a 30 ft cliff but thankfully was intact when we got to him. We were 8 miles from the trailhead in some of the most spectacular country I have ever been in.

Thanks to all those who offered advice and thanks to Cory for coming on the hunt and helping us.
