Unit 61 expectations

Dad and I have a unit 61 2nd season tag,we have not had much time on the plateau this year. Is a 180" deer reasonable if we get off the road a couple of miles. Or is 160 a good deer to kill, just trying to see what we should expect.

If you see a 160 buck you best be taking it. Or let it grow, maybe some day the unit will return to it's former goodness.

Even in the best units in the state, a 180 second season is a real tall order. That's a tough season to hunt for the big boys. Good luck.

CMBulldog is right, killing a 180 deer isn't easy no matter the season or unit. You have to put in the time, be willing to eat your tag by passing smaller bucks, and get lucky. Very few people are willing to do the first two allowing the third to happen. 61 will produce a few 180 bucks this year off of public land, you have to set your own expectation and be willing to live with it when the hunt is over.

Thanks for the reply, our intentions aren't necessarily to kill a trophy buck. The main reason we are going is because dad will never draw this unit again and he wanted to hunt the plateau one last time. I just don't want to pass a good buck thinking a 180 is just around the corner.killing a deer is just really a bonus on this trip, it is really about being in the mountains with Dad. He scouted some this summer and has a few spots marked where he seen deet, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

That is great, hunting is way more about the experience and being out there with your dad. I would say if your dad see's a nice buck and want's it, go for it. Who cares what it scores. It's all about the time trip. Good luck.
