My nephew picked up a second season unit 44 deer tag off the reissue list last week and I wondered if anyone had some advice for us. He's 15, never killed a mule deer buck and is not going to be picky at all! I would guess the first branch antlered deer that gives us a shot will be in trouble
I hunted unit 44 for elk a lot so I know the unit pretty well but its been about 10 years ago and I didn't pay that much attention to the deer I saw. I do remember seeing deer on hardscrabble mountain and (particularly Mackenzie gulch) and maybe around Mucky Lake?
Idealy, we would love to find an area where we can hike in a mile or two and glass some large hillsides or drainage to find a good buck and put the sneak on to get into range. I'm just not sure where to find them in mid/late October. I know second season is tough to find the big boys but he's definitely not looking for a monster... As a matter of fact, I might have to wrestle the gun away from him if we see a forky
Thanks in advance!
