I was wondering if anyone has ever had this tag. I know someone who has it and it seems like an awesome tag but I have never heard from anyone who has actually had the tag. Anyone have any input?

Never heard of Mountain Island RFW, there is a Mountain Meadows, is that what you meant? Either way, I have nothing to share regarding RFW hunts.

Not familiar with the unit 40 RFW but I do know that unit 40 being extremely hard public access and a lot of managed private land has incredible animals. It would the top unit in the state for a lot of people if there was any public access.

I do not support or like the RFW program and as such I never pay much attention to the hunts.

It could be one hell of a tag.

>how are you getting a tag
>to an RFW that doesn't
>exist. the only one listed
>in unit 40 is Pinon
>Mesa Ranch

Again, I do not have the tag. I have a friend that does. When you put in for the Pinion Mesa RFW tag, it is actually split up between the Auberts, Mountain Island, and Kings. He chose Mountain Island to focus on, because of the size, but he can go to any of them. I am just curious because I have never heard from anyone after they hunted these ranches on how their experience went, good or bad, other than Elkduds, and I appreciate his response. I was just wondering if anyone had any input.

Gotcha didn't know it was split like that. It must be good looks like it took 22 points for the either sex tag this year

There are some really good animals there I don't know if you are looking for deer or elk? But unless you have a minimum of 22+ points for elk and 17/18 points resident you will not be hunting there. They only give 4 public tags for elk and 2 for deer.
I know a lady that drew her tag a few years ago and had a great time and had a great experience. She ended up killing a 330ish bull. I also know of guy and his wife that drew deer tags, they too had a good time each killing great bucks.

He?s after an elk. It took him 25 points. He wasn?t real happy when he didn't draw after 23 and 24 but that's another story. We?ve seen some bulls that come off of there as well as I've hunted all around it. They just got a 360 and 388 bull during archery trough the paid hunters. I was more curious as to the program and how they treat you. Did they try and say,?You can't go over here!? ?Only to here!?, etc.
I have no doubt he'll kill a toad.

That is my hang up with the RFW properties as well. I know a couple that keep the public guys out of certain areas. Not to mention some RFWs give the public hunters some pretty crappy dates for elk hunting. This one however has some prime dates for elk in my opinion

That was my hang up as well. And yes, this year should be awesome for the rut!! I talked to a friend at the CPW and the ranches are not allowed to do that. According to the contracts, they have to allow RFW license holders full access to hunt anywhere on the property. That being said, you and I both know they have ways around that. It's a problem I'll never have but just more curious than anything. I was going to use 12 points this year for a RFW for deer in the Meeker area but instead, I'm using them for a 3rd season 21 tag. Hopefullly, it works out better.

Sorry. I was off hunting. He did go and had a great time. I told him the hardest problem he would have is passing up the biggest bulls he's ever had the chance to hunt and wait for the big one. Well, he couldn't do it. He ended up shooting a dandy on the first day. I have only seen one picture and I haven't got the details on all of the hunt yet since either he was gone for a week or I was. I would guess it was somewhere close to 335-340 but i couldn't quite tell on the phone picture. He did say it was the hunt of a lifetime and got to spend it with his son and couldn't of asked for a better time. He was kind of disjointed it ended so quick but what do you do?? You can't have it all.
