The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission will consider establishing a horn and antler collecting closure on all public lands west of I-25 January 1-April 30 at their November 16 meeting in Yuma. In addition, they will consider a proposal to require purchase of an annual $40 antler and horn collection permit. The meeting agenda can be found here:
http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Commission/2017/Nov/Agenda.pdf

You can read the proposed regulations at the following link. The portion about the new season is on page 2, and the proposed new permit is on page 9.

Hey what do ya know another potiental right taken away with the privilege of obtaining the right back by paying a fee. Terrible dumb... Leeches... What next shed hunting preference points and limited draw units? I highly doubt public input will have much influence on the commissions direction.

Thanks for sharing Colorado oak.

Yep, once again. It's all about managing for the wildlife. Opps I mean $$$$$$$$MONEY$$$$$$
Just give them more funds to waste on programs that don't have any benefit to wildlife, but the I'm sure the parks department will see substantial benefits.

This is garbage. I understand "protecting wildlife" but paying to shed hunt??? If anything just limit times to go out. All about the money.

It's too bad it's come to this sort of think. March 15 sounds like a much more reasonable date if there had to be closures. The shed license is ridiculous.

If there is a designated season for shed hunting, there has to be enforcement. That costs CPW $, so licenses would pay for some of that, as would fines for violations. I wonder if they will propose resident and nonresident permit prices for shed hunting. Followed by a draw, preference points, shed hunter safety card...

I think they ought to outlaw the sale of sheds, that would solve a lot of the problems. Those of us who just love sheds and having them wouldn't be affected. The commercial guys would be.

Exactly. Problem solved!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-17 AT 04:21AM (MST)[p]Beanman and Tailchaser how can we get that done? I will help....In the mean time I SUPORT CPAW with this reg. Why would I SUPORT this??? I live in Gunnison Colorado I have witnessed a LOT of shed gathering that was harmful to our wildlfe..The whole western half?? Wow. It is warm and dry a LOT of other places by then. The greed and harmful behavior of more then a few have brought us to this..I Thank CPAW for trying to protect our wildlife in any way they can...kind of their job description isn't it? Our West wide lack of fawn recruitment is of great concern to these agency's an to some of us. There are many factors...Shed gatheing.IS A FACTOR!!

After what I have seen the last couple of yeas here in the NW, I am all for it 100% if they actually enforce it. Last year was unreal. With Utah closed, Wyoming Closed and most of the NW Corner closed, in one weekend while out camping we saw 2 trucks from Montana with 6 wheelers, 7 trucks from Utah with 12 wheelers, a truck from South Dakota with 4 guys. In this area there is a huge sage flat area where the deer winter and after that weekend there was not 40 yards in the sage between the wheeler tracks. Having areas closed only put a ton more stress on areas that were not closed.

It was sad seeing the deer in knee deep snow running from ATVs with their tongues hanging out and being pushed away from the best late winter feed.

When I called to report all the officer in the area were further north enforcing the closure rules and when they arrived it was really late afternoon.

It sucks but shed hunting is even worse than hunting when it comes to fame and glory aholes...

Were there any actions taken at the meeting yesterday?

No action taken yesterday. It sounds like there is strong support for the season, but not so much for the license. The commission instructed staff to provide a financial analysis on a proposed license to make sure that it wouldn't cost more to implement than it would bring in. It sounds like they might consider requiring a license only for the first month of the season each year, to prevent the casual recreationist and fall hunters from needing a license the other 6 months that the season is open. You can listen to the discussion at the following link, beginning at the 1:38:30 mark.

It seems that current laws against harassing wildlife and riding atv/utvs off trail are not being enforced while people look for antlers, so is the answer to add more laws?

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

This will be an interesting cluster flop to watch play out!

"attempting to locate" sounds like if you are out of the house you are guilty, or if you have a good view out of the window maybe not even that threshold.

I'm sure the true professionals of the dow will adjudicate fairly and without any prejudice whatsoever.
