LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-17 AT 05:49PM (MST)[p]Well after watching my sons shoot a few good buck over the last few years , I thought it was time to cash in some points on a 4th season hunt.
The season was a lot tougher than I thought. The deer numbers seemed to be about half of what they should have been. With my son and myself covering one side of the unit and my buddiy Elks96 covering the other half , we were seeing on average 10-12 bucks each day but all small 3-4 points. The biggest being a 25? 4x4. On the second to last day of the hunt, right as the sun was setting and the snow began to fly , my son spotted 2 deer coming out of the thick brush into a meadow . His words were? big buck , big buck? I got set up and soon as a doe moved out of the way , with one 250 yard shot he dropped . He is not the buck I had went into the season hoping for but I am beyond happy with him after seeing what the season had to offer . We made the best of it and had a good time !

That's a dandy. Given the weather for the season, and the tough hunting conditions, I think you did quite well. Congrats!

Good job Mr. mossback!

All my life I've hoped to kill a buck like him. Great mass, good tine length, well developed eye guards, even a cheater for good measure. I've killed a buck or two that may be a skosh wider but not with that much mass, I've killed bucks will bigger eye guards, and bucks with longer tines, (on some beams) but never all on the same frame, like yours. I love those heavy typical framed bucks!!!!

I've built up to 12 points for Colorado but I should have started 6 or 8 years earlier. At 70, I'm sure I'll never live long enough to put myself in one of those 4th season situations. I think Colorado's mule deer management is extremely responsive to sportsmen's evolving mature harvest interests, to their credit. While it certainly isn't popular with all sportsmen, I wish more western States would manage for a more mature buck harvest. I know it would require issuing fewer tags ( a lot less) but it would be worth it to a lot of hunters.

You may have wished for bigger but that one's a dandy. I'm envious, big time.

Nothing wrong with that buck.
