In Five Years ...

I'll be at a place in life where I can do much more hunting than I currently can. What do vouchers run for deer and elk? (*Disclaimer - I'd rather hunt with a muzzleloader or a rifle, size is just a number - I'd prefer quantity over quality) If my budget was $10k for both vouchers, would that be ?enough?? Using horses/llamas to get in somewhere is definitely an option, I'm not opposed to using a guide service, and at least once, I'd love to experience a high country muzzleloader mule deer hunt.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Be sure and be putting in for points. With 5 points you will have a choice of more than a couple of decent muzzleloading high country hunts. That said, I will probably revert to bowhunting when I retire, at least for elk. A whole month to retire covering the rut. Might hunt deer then too or choose another season.

Tx has it right, if you have five years to build points do it.

And, Tx has it right, I just retired and plan on spending archery season chasing elk.

If you are a resident, 5 points can you get you good tags for both.

But yes, 10k can get you a couple nice tags.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-30-17 AT 12:53PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the information so far! I should have clarified, I'm a nonresident and even though I am leaning towards picking up vouchers, I plan on buying points for deer and elk every year.

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

Hell... thirty's you are still just a puppy! Use that 10K for some good quality foundational equipment to last your lifetime and start sweating a bit and you will do fine.

High country with a muzzy is easy and cheap as far as points go. Pick a spot on the divide and start covering ground.

Or you could start with any of the units (or adjacent units) to the high country rifle hunts but go with muzzy or bow while you build points to go with a rifle later.

Cover ground, use good optics, learn the country all the rest is easy.
