Hey guys I wanted to try an Archey Elk hunt this year in Colorado. I wanted to know what units would be the best unit to put in for that I have the best odds to draw a good unit with decent Bulls! I don't want a unit I have to wait years for. I just want to hunt them in the rut. I never have! I can't seem to draw a tag here in New Mexico. I want to experience the steaming bulls. I I'm not looking for a 350. I'm just wanting to feel the adrenaline rush of a screaming bull. If I can get a few units to start studying for. Looking forward to your guys Answers and commits. It sounds as if this might be your first time applying in colorado. Most Colorado units for elk are OTC tags. The draw is not random, it is a preference point system so those with the highest points that put in for the tag draw it. Most of The units that are low points to draw aren't really better than many of the OTC units. If you want to draw one of the better units you need to start applying every year and building the points needed to draw them.

It sounds like your best bet right now would be to pick an OTC unit and start getting to know it, try to hunt it as many years as possible and learn the pockets where the elk really like to rut.
