Ok need a little help from you seasoned rifle hunters, I'm an archer don't rifle hunt much, but I've 10 MR points to burn and think I'm settled on 22 3rd season. please any input. would be helpful, I'm not looking for GPS numbers..just general input on the unit and hunt tactics, as like I said I'm an archer..on any other day..

Thanks

If you are an archery hunter, why not look at a lesser unit for a 4th season tag and hunt archery? Find a 4th season tag and hunt the rut with a bow for 5 days. Most 4th season tags have only 15 other hunters and the deer tend to be rutting so shooting a decent buck with a bow will be possible.

Unit 22 was pretty bad this last year for big bucks and the hunting was hard, even in the 4th season. Last year more deer went into 21 and there were more big deer taken in 21. 22 is not a good hunt if you like to hike/get away from crowds, etc. It is a road hunters wet dream in the fact that there are roads everywhere. The deer quality is decent in 22, but the hunt quality is not what most expect. Drive the roads, step out glass , back in the truck, drive glass etc. Col country and there will be plenty of deer, but for many I have helped in the unit they are not used to the constant traffic, and high pressure of ATVs and roads every where...

If you are happy with a 140-160 type buck then burn those points! If you want a 170+ and you are lucky as hell, well give it a try! If you want a hunt where you can pass a 170? buck looking for that big one! Well you are about 4 years too late! If you take note, that tag for residents takes barely 3 points! There is a reason that the residents wouldn't spend 8-10 points on that hunt! Quality has been on a decline from 3-5 years ago. Good unit? Ya its ok! Worth 10 points? Not in my opinion.
My office is in the middle of 22 I'm running pipelines 4 days a week year round, so you can take my opinion for what its worth!

thanks for you input..i actually decided to pass on Colorado and booked a PL archery hunt in Utah. same as last year took a decent 3x4 160ish and a buck antalope. so I'm optimistic that I could improve on that this year, as a few in the 170 - 190 were taken.
