Have 18pts as a NR for elk was looking at 40 and 61 both outfitters said point creep is off the charts takes 21 points to draw rifle take first season and second season is to much of a gamble.Getting to old to keep playing this game so I'am looking for suggestions on my best options to use my points looking at a guided hunt any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Brian

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-18 AT 04:50PM (MST)[p]Take up muzzleloading and go for 40 private land. And you will have a gun that you can get picked again in Colorado 1-2 years later. Hunting during the rut is always fun. Even 1st rifle is at the very end of the rut if at all.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Hard to believe all outfitters in 40 booked that far in advance since it is a draw only

If you haven't already you should contact Mike Lawson with Trophy Class Outfitters in Unit 40 for the muzzleloader hunt. But I wouldn't be surprised if he is booked 2 or 3 years out.

Unit 76 would probably be the next choice. I haven't hunted with him but Sammy Frazier with Frazier Outfitting usually has good reviews for 76.

"Hard to believe all outfitters in 40 booked that far in advance since it is a draw only"

I don't know if they're all booked but it would not surprise me.there are a lot of guys with a bunch of points who are tired of waiting for the top units and just want to burn their points so 40 is a good option.

did check with Mike he is one booked till 2021 could draw second season but he said it's to much of a crap shoot on that hunt

Well it's seems outfitters in area 40 not that many and the ones I talked booked and need at less 21 points as of now for first season rifle. Not sure what to do most other units I looked at only need 6-8 to draw and not sure how good those units are? Seems I'am in no mans land not enough to draw a really good unit to many for avg unit I think it's going to get worse with the new draw system this year. Would you keep going for points or use them up open for suggestions?

With point creep I don't think accumulating more points will help. You won't be any closer to drawing premium tags five years from now than you are now.

If it was me I would book that 2021 hunt with Mike Lawson and start practicing with an open sighted muzzleloader. That could be a premium hunt.
