Changes to CO Draw Process

It won't have an impact on point creep for a number of years because any new people who now put in will start with 0. However, it could have an impact on those units that now require 0-1 point to draw. That effect could be immediate

In 3 years the non resident goat, sheep, and moose odds will tank as I bet the eligible pool for tags doubles now that it is online and doesn't require a huge chunk of upfront money. I believe the resident odds for the big 3 will also be affected.

It was a pain to apply for Turkey for me and my Daughter. Took better part of the evening. I called them and told them. Then I said good luck with this disaster.Today my friend called and they told him system was down and had no time table to be back up!Talked to another friend who told me it took him 3 hours to get a point for Turkey for his wife and he finally just called and got a point. Each family member who plans on putting in ahs to have their own password and own E-mail address. Problem I was having as it kept kicking me out was it would not let me use my computer for hers as the computer ID# was the same for both apps! What a joke! If you can get in and at least redo your info, you should be in better shape than most who will wait til the last week.

In the past 20 years I have watched a lot of states switch to this and CC apps. It used to roughly double the NR apps.

I predict a 50% increase from 2017 NR apps to 2019.

Ouch

And the website states to enter your CID# that was associated with your "ORIGINAL" identifying information, i.e., drivers license. I did just that and got nowhere. I had to call and finally got a live person after being re routed numerous times to the "call center". 17 years ago when first starting to apply I lived in Wyoming and used that drivers license as the identifier for the CID#. In the interim I lived in Georgia and now Florida. Once I finally got to the live person who had some critical thinking skills he told me my identifying information is my Georgia drivers license. When I asked if I could change to my Florida drivers license he said no not without sending him a copy.

And if the guys on the Colorado forum think that system is screwed up just read some of the trouble people are having with the new on line system in Nevada. That system does not even allow the use of internet explorer. Whoever posted about not waiting until the last week to apply has given good advice. There amount of applicants who will have trouble by waiting until the last week to apply will be astronomical!

Don - you are correct. The odds to draw a sheep tag, while already poor, will go down considerably. Due to this change and the tag fee which goes up slightly each year, now about $2100 for a NR, I've decided to bail out of the Colorado application game for sheep despite having 3 bonus plus 14 weighted points. The real crunch will be in four years once all these new applicants with 3 bonus points are then dumped into the weighted pool.

Sucks for draw odds...as a non red I always put in for deer but haven't put in for elk and moose because expensive up front fees...I probably will now. I guess they will see it as a good thing because I will start buying the pref points...
Sucks for draw odds, I wish AZ still charged fees up front like CO used to, draw odds sure haven't gotten any better here...

You are right Codylee.
I just got out of the 5 yr penalty box. So in 3 yrs we will probably be competing for the same tag. Welcome aboard.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-18 AT 08:41PM (MST)[p]In Colorado from what I read and understand if I understand it correctly, mtn goat, moose and rocky mtn sheep all have a 3 point cap ? So after three years everyone is at max points and In the same race ?

Weighted points really don't mean anything. I have 3 and 17 weighted for Moose as a Res and more people seem to draw with 3 and 3, and 3 and 5.

So you can max out at three points but gain a preference point every year you don't draw as well ? And then what do he weighted points suppose to do for you ? Add your name into the pool more times ?

From the way I understand it is every applicant after 3 points is issued a number and that number is divided by your weighted points and that gives you a new number. Lowest numbers then draw out. So if you get a high number issued to you it really doesn't matter what your weighted points really are because you are going to be unsuccessful.

Oh ok I'm understanding it now at least I believe I am. So if I have ten weighted points and I get drawn the number 1000 then I would have a ?score? (or whatever the actually term is) of 100 and if my number is lower then everyone else?s then I get a tag.

So basically every tag is a random tag there is no high point preference point holder and no way of being sure your going to draw anything .

I appreciate the help with understanding the point system some what better thanks guys !

And then the other three points are just for fun I guess. That's why everyone always says 3-2 or 3-10 or whatever ! Kinda lame your first three years mean nothing to the system but I guess it makes it where someone that applies for the first time won't draw .

So you can see why the hunter ( that filled out a paper application and sent in a check for 3 years with no chance of drawing and now has numerous weighted points) would not be happy.

Brad A. Colo Bowsite has a explanation of the weighted draw..post by "sandbrew" I can't do "links" couple years old.I feel it's a random draw now after 3 years. I'm 3 and 17 weighted for moose and sheep..35 years for sheep.
I miss the double digit preference points they took away 20 years ago for this "New weighted system" As for moose I have never missed a app since the first year they gave tags here. 1985? Or 1987..im to old to remember..both species of sheep and bull moose are never in a life time tags for the vast majority of the 2018 applicant's. But a few over 200 folks are getting tags each year. You can't be one of them with out applying..

It's the sign of the times. It is something to reflect on no?

Guys always crying about "hunting becoming a rich mans sport" " I can't afford to put my son, daughter etc Into the draw" and then Colorado takes a step to reduce a giant expense (refunds) and at the same time makes it affordable to apply and hunters are the first to complain.

Will it lower draw odds? For sure. Will it affect this years applicants? For sure. There are a lot of guys who pick and choose what they used to put in for I.e moose this year, sheep the next etc based on cost. This year, they'll put in for the whole lot. Desert tags applicants will go up as well.

I've killed two Rams in a very short time but in that same time period have yet to draw a goat or moose. Goats were easy odds back in the day, but still I've yet to draw. Colorado has been good to many of us, and will continue to be.

Good luck in the draws.
