Co antelope 19 points

Due to a number of reasons my son and I now have 19 points for antelope. We want to hunt somewhere that gives us a good chance to see something over 14 inches. We've tried one hunt on the Pergatorie river and that was a joke. We are looking at possibly area 2 201, or area 11. We hear good and bad. Anyone had any experience in this areas? I haven't had much luck on RFW either. Any information on anything statewide would be welcomed. Don't really want to pay for private land trespass either. If they would do another banking for wildlife with our points we would try that but I don't think that is going to happen again. Thanks

My buddy drew the 2/201 tag 2 years ago and we struggled to find a 14" buck. Tons and tons of 12" bucks but bigger bucks were few and far between. He ended up shooting just at 14" but it wasn't worth the 18-19 points he used if you want my honest opinion. I have another friend who drew it last year in the hybrid and got a 15" but even that was hard he said. I honestly don't think that hunt is worth 8 points, much less 18. I've heard the Trinidad area is much better but I haven't hunted any of it to tell you yes or no. My opinion, look somewhere other than 2/201 but if you decide that's where you want to go, I can give you some places. There are bigger ones on the other side of the border in Wyoming and I think it only takes like 5-6 points for there. Makes no sense. Again, there is lots of antelope and lots of bucks but I am even friends with the meeker Area wildlife Manager and he told me to shoot the first 14" buck we see. You might not get another chance at one.

The NW units are cool just for the "experience factor". Simply amazing country. If you're looking to justify 19 pp in CO size-wise, it's just not that realistic. On a good year I'd look at North Park also. It sounds like the south produces nice bucks but others will have to chime in there.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-18 AT 04:24PM (MST)[p]I'd take 3 over 2,201, someone will be along shortly to talk about my post count. 19 points is nearly a once in a lifetime tag, good luck.

I hunted 81 with a ton of points and I took that unit because there was only 25 tag,I had a great hunt and may have gotten lucky with a 77in, but there was a lot of animals and a unit that is so big you will never see all of it, I think I could have done better if I kept looking but I was there to enjoy the hunt and not search the hole season for what may or may not be there. good luck

I'll have to watch this post, cause I don't have a clue where to use my 20 points. The RFW property I was planning on using them on is no longer in the program

LAST EDITED ON Feb-15-18 AT 09:17PM (MST)[p]Nice to hear you did so well in 81. I drew it two years ago and returned the tag. Don't know where you saw "lots of animals" but that was not my experience.

I've also heard that 2/201 is amazing county and might be worth it just for the experience.

Otherwise, 3 or 11 are probably as good a bet as any. I just wouldn't hold out much hope for anything bigger than 14".

Look at the North Park units 16/17/171. A few years ago three of us found ourselves in similar circumstances. We had 14 PP and were hoping to find a unit where we could have a chance at a decent buck. After lots of research I finally got turned on to the North Park area. Talking to the biologist, he told us the area held numerous bucks in the 14in class plus a few 15 inchers. Long story short we drew tags and went with expectations of shooting bucks in the 14in range, but we actually only took one 14in buck, the other two bucks were exceptional. One was 16 1/8in buck and net scored 82 7/8. The other was a 17in buck and net scored 86. All the bucks were very heavy. The only weakness was the 14 and 17 incher had weak prongs.

My son drew a North Park antelope tag last year. I did some research and heard from those that spend time in the unit that there was severe winterkill in that area. I ended up returning my son's tag. It may be a few years before mature bucks and the population rebound.

I'd agree there was probably winter kill in that 16,17,171 unit as I got the tag you returned off the reissue. I had spent time in that area years ago and compared to what I saw on that hunt last year, there had to be a die off. I killed a respectful 14 3/4? buck, but struggled to find many antelope at all. I did not get to scout unit as I got it off the reissue the Friday before the season started. I didn't have to use my 17 PP?s since it was reissue and I am glad I didn't waste points. I'm in the same boat in what to use my 17 on. It won't be in 16,17,171 tag.

There are some very good genetics in Area 16 North Park Area. The huge die off really set the area back likely 10 years. I hunted there in '05 & again with a friend in '06, very fine bucks & overall good looking horns & mass-- found one in '05 that net scored B & C 84, 16 inches long, 6 1/2 prongs. Could not find another one that good in '06. Lots of antelope. But now the huge die off-- sad, but it happens, very cold winters in North Park with lots of snow quite often. Stay away from that whole area, most antelope died, so I was told & per reports from hunters.

Ponohunt, That's funny you got the re-issue tag for North Park. I actually got a call after my son turned it in....and turned it down.
