Colorado unit 76 elk

I didn't draw my Wyoming elk tag this year, so now I'm going to burn my points in Colorado. I have 16 non resident points and should draw unit 76 1st rifle. Never been down there but my dad hunted it like 20 years ago. I'm sure things have changed a little. Anyways I'll have horses and want to pack in 4 to 6 miles to get away from some hunters. Any drainages that are better than others? Anyone hunt it last year that would be willing to share some information.
Thanks.

Sounds like a great set up for adventure seems the word on the playground is lots of 270-290 bulls...with with lots of those kicking about my bet is a guy could find a 330 plus if he is patient...

With all due respect! If you have never been on the hunt maybe you are not the right guy to make a comment. Maybe you should comment on a hunt you actually been on.

Kind of like commenting on a trip to India and you never been there.

Well knowing people that have hunted it archery, Muzzy and rifle and seeing it talked about in detail for like 15 years online and actually doing some more focused research and looking to maybe use my point there a few years ago..you come up with a general consensus.. If the criterias is to have actually have hunted the unit before commenting this site is going to get pretty quiet really quick ... give me a break...

Break given. Did you come up with a general consensus on the writer in the Mule Deer forum researching info? Can you give him a break?
1st amendment and 2nd amendment. Our ancestors were pretty smart!

Think someone needs to get their panties unwound.

Did anyone in the know come up with helpful info about unit 76. Is it worth the 16 nr points or pass. In the same boat with points and always will take help/advice on areas. Good luck to all in the draw.

Do it, unless you want to wait forever for a northwest corner tag go hunt. My buddies have all had good hunts in there and have killed some nice bulls, plus the country is awesome. People get too hung up on score go up there enjoy the country and have fun calling in multiple bulls.

Orion is on it...your in point limbo land...and I still think a 300ish bull public land is a damn nice bull and the experience is really the most important...... epic country!!!

What's your goals for the hunt?

Have a fun hunt, see lots of elk, likely kill a 300 inch bull, maybe something better, do it.

If it's a 340 bust kind of deal, I wouldn't burn points in 76.

Obviously the 76 early tag is the best, but it worth waiting quite a few more years for over 1st season ?

Thanks for the replies. I would be happy with a nice symmetrical 6x6 bull. I don't care about score, just want to hunt and see lots of elk and the country.
I've heard the elk will start to migrate if they get weather over there, how true is that?
Any drainages that are better that hold more elk? Feel free to pm me.

Thanks

I hunted the unit three years ago and I would consider adventurewriter?s initial assessment to be spot on. Not sure about migration patterns but wouldn't worry about that with bow muzzy or first rifle. As far as drainages.....check maps and pick some to take a look at. From my experience they seem to be distributed throughout and if your willing to burn some boot leather you shouldnt have a problem finding what your looking for.

Just wondering if anyone has hunted or been up miners Creek over by creed? Many elk up that drainage? Did the 2013 fire hot that area?
Thanks

I'm drawing the muzzy tag this year and plan on scouting 3-4 times this spring and summer. I'm only a 4 hour drive to the unit. I have some areas marked on my map to check out but we'll see where I decide to spend opening day. Good luck and let me know if you wanna meet up there for a scouting trip.

I have hunted 76 quite a few times since roughly 1980 to recently. I have taken some nice bulls there but I like to cow hunt now more than I like to save up points. If you are hunting early in the season and have horses you might want to try around Wason Park or go to the far West of the unit. The area up behind the Rio Grande res. near the unit line can be good for horse hunters. Do not be tempted to hunt Starvation from the bottom. Miners is OK but a little too easy to access so you usually see hunters.

An honest 300"+ bull is a tall order but there are a few killed every year. I would not pass up a good 5x5 while hoping for a pretty 6x6 in 76 unless I liked the taste of tag soup.

Good luck.

>Groan......

Do you believe I gave too much information? It is a large unit and the areas I mentioned are fairly general. I didn't think I was being specific enough to cause anyone else any heartburn. I think it is possible to edit my post if it inadvertently gives away someone's "honey hole".

I hunted the unit in 2013, but more importantly I scouted it for 3 years prior to my hunt waiting for the points. If you don't take the time to scout it, you are really missing out on the most enjoyable aspect of that unit. Elk acting like unpressured elk all summer. I'm not going to tell you where to hunt, you can earn that on your own. I will say the previous comments ring pretty true in my experience, no shortage of sub 300 bulls. Over 320 seemed very few and far between. I was luck and took a 365 well above tree line, but in all those years of scouting I never saw a bull the same size.

I returned to the unit a couple years ago to help a friend of a friend pack out a bull. It was a nice 6 for Colorado, but I was startled about how few elk were in the area I had previously hunted. No joke, I was just amazed that the area wasn't crawling with elk anymore. I talked to a guide I bumped into who was packing out a client's bull and he made mention that the winter before there was a major harvest at low elevation due to weather. I didn't have time to verify his assessment and haven't been back to really scout the area since. However, if you get the tag you should invest the time to learn the area you are going to hunt. You might not glass up the biggest bull in the area until the rut, but you can learn all the sheep trails and sneaks to get to where the elk are or where they are going. The other take away for me was how uninterested the bulls were in elk talk and I assume this is because there is elk talk going on non stop in that area all the time even in the summer before it gets too hot.

One other thing I noted during my scouting, was one of my scouting years had me backpacking up high in October. There had been a snow storm, but nothing huge for CO. The snow must of been knee deep or less, but the thing that caught my attention was the elk highways were all streaming downhill. I was the only thing above tree line on that mountain that weekend. The only tracks I saw going uphill was a set of bear tracks. It was just a one time experience, so I wouldn't draw any conclusions from it but I would keep it in the back of my mind if I ever did a rifle hunt.

Good news, I drew my tag. Not a big surprise though. Won't have a chance to make it over there to scout. Just going off of where my dad hunted 20 years ago and had a good hunt. Hopefully the elk still use that area. Any last tips or advice?
Thanks

hey, just starting to look at 76 , current have 19 pts , how did do at that high elevation . I was out there with the family over the 4th of july awesome county !congradulation on a great hunt and awesome bull

I drew with 17. I live at sea level so altitude was a concern. Also the reason I did a drop camp. Arrived 2 days early to acclimate, drank a bunch of water constantly, no caffeine, no alchahol for 3 days prior. Took Diomax and seemed to help. Felt sluggish at first but stronger every day.

thanks for the info, that's an awesome pic with you and your bull, the back ground in the pic is the icing on the cake!!
