Ok guys i hunted this unit 2 years ago and was very disappointed in the amount of deer we seen. Yes the weather was very warm and dry and tough conditions. We hunted 6 days and never saw a buck that even tempted me. Not only that but had a very hard time even finding does in the unit. I had some good info on the unit from other hunters that had hunted it before. All the info i had said you will see a lot of deer. I poured over maps all summer long, just not any deer in the unit that we could find. I have a buddy that has a buddy, ha ha and he drew the tag last year and it was the same story could hardly find any deer in the unit. My question is WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS UNIT? Did they have a bad winter kill a few years ago and DWR said nothing or didnt know about it themselves? The country is the most beautiful deer country you can lay your eyes on with no deer in it. Did they all stay on private land? I would sure think some deer would be on the public land in this unit? WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? and yes i am thinking about going back again this year, Maybe i didn't learn my lesson.

I have lived in this area and hunted it for the last twelve years.... the problem is we have a wildlife management problem... to many bears, lions, coyotes and ELK.. and the deer have been on a steady decline and its not getting better its getting worse...

Well that's not good at all. Do sportsman in Colorado have any say on these issues at all. Is there any wildlife meetings where sportsman?s voice are heard?

They have meetings but they are in such denial, they say its all contributed to loss of habitat.. which in my opinion is the biggest copout ever...
in the days of old there were 3 times as much grazing of domestic sheep which were in direct competition with mule deer cause they are browsers, however with the sheep came herders and good ol fashion 10/80 poison.. eliminating the majority of predators.. this problem is not due to habitat in most areas its due to too many mouths eating deer.

In the last decade there has been a drastic change in the amount of deer I've seen in the unit. We hunt the same area every year for archery season. We used to get in 15 to 20 stalks in a season on mature deer. Now we are lucky to get one or two. We are looking for other units now, it's just not worth the time anymore.

The CPW has their head in the sand on the issue. Too many bears and they continue to increase tag numbers. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that that's going to have an impact on deer numbers...

Not to mention the sheep dogs hunt fawns in packs. Saw this happen twice in a five day hunt. Called, emailed the fish and game. Who knows if it went anywhere. Next time deer hunt will turn into a big white dog hunt real quick.
