18 NR Deer points

So I have 18 NR deer points that I am thinking of cashing in this year. At 65 and solo I need something that I can do from a base camp. Is there any late season hunts that I can draw. looking for a decent 170 class buck but more interested in seeing plenty of deer and enjoys the time in Colorado. I was thinking of the Unit 2 Muzzy hunt but I have been told that its been a poor hunt the last couple years.

I've never hunted it but from all the research I've done 66 third should meet all your requirements
I don't have enough points for that one.
I don't think 18 points is enough for any of the popular fourth season hunts

Yep 66 3rd and a few of the 4th season zones I could get in. It seems like every year I wait till the last minute and never can decide on a deer unit.

I can't relate to that. I do the same thing.
Last year I did apply for that 66 muzzleloader buck tag but a couple days later I changed my mind and called them and changed my application over the phone. And I didn't draw anything.
I am now trying to get out of the point chase but at the same time don't want to waste them.
I have been doing tons of research and pouring over all the stats. Even elk hunter numbers during the deer hunts.
I have called and talked to all the biologist and local folks I can get a hold of to get as much info as possible.
PM me if you like.

I still keep circling back to Unit 2 or Unit 61 Muzzy. Thoughts from anyone that hunted either of the units. I have elk hunted 2 but only spent a week in 61 scouting for elk several years ago with a friend.

With all the negative Deer reports coming from 61 I don't know why people are still considering using a lot of points there.

I would not use 18 points on a unit 2 muzzy tag, and i live right down the road. The description of the hunt you are looking for does not describe that hunt. Unit 2 deer can be really tough. Personally with that amount of points I'd stick with a rut hunt with the fewest amount of competition i could find.

Well based on some great advice from this post and a few Pm's I received I decided to use my points and apply for Unit 66 3rd. Nice thing is that with my points I can actually plan on the hunt. Now if I can draw my Utah moose and NM elk 2018 might just be a banner year.

Good choice. Send that application in and don't second-guess it.
That is the hunt I would apply for if I had one or two more points.
If you need some free help let me know. I am a pretty good Buck hunter and may be able to help you and it would help me also as I want to draw that hunt in the future.
Congratulations on making the right decision.

Always nice to know you can plan the hunt now instead of waiting for the draw results. Good luck post some pics for us if you can!
