Drop Camp - 2nd Season Elk CO.

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to post the name of an outfitter who operates drop camps that they would personally recommend in Colorado for 2nd season elk? We will be purchasing our licenses over the counter.

My brother and nephew and I will be making the trip from PA. Been out there quite a few times, last being in unit 43 on an early high country backpack hunt last year. Neither of us has ever been on a guided or drop camp hunt before but would like to see if we can get back in the mountain and it looks like the drop camp may be a good option, especially for getting an elk out.

Been on quite a few DIY trips for elk with reasonable success but still haven't found the place I'm looking for. I would have liked to do archery but my nephew wants to rife hunt.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Kind of late now, but why don't you apply as a group to first rifle season. Many can be drawn with 0 points, and you catch the end of the rut. You have til midnight!!!

txhunter, We all have numerous elk points that we didn't want to spend on a lesser unit. I have 17 pts and have my heart set on unit 76 some year that I have to go by myself. My brother has 15pts and my nephew has 11. Thanks for the suggestion and reply.

DW, We have experience in unit 43 and 74. Really don't have a set place we want to go just looking for recommendations from the Monster Muley members as to a good drop camp for elk. Private ground would be a plus but all we have ever hunted was National Forest. Though if we could utilize a drop camp with horses it might get us into some better hunting. Also if we get an elk, would be nice to have a packer haul it out.

Thanks, for the replies.

Check out Hog Back Ridge Adventures. Seems to me that they are just what you are looking for. They have drop camps set up and high elk numbers in a great area. Lots of private ground in units 22 and 32. With option to be guided, can help retrieve animals too.

I looked at their website. $3,500 seems a little more than I want to spend on a drop camp. Thanks for the info though.

So how much does it cost to get dropped with your own gear and food assuming 3 pack horses and 3 riding horses?

$160.00 per horse per trip, plus $160.00 guide fee. One guide per three horses, minimum of two guides = $2560

or does it equal $3200?

($160 x 8 horses (2 for the guides and 6 for your group) + $160 x 2 guides) x 2 trips = $3200

Not a bad deal for 3 people if you have some gear.
