Why do draw results take so long?

What I am trying to figure out is why it takes 9 weeks from the April 3 application deadline to the June 4-8 draw results. Considering that there are no paper apps anymore, it should take less time to process apps and if you make an error, it will not let you apply. Once the apps are in, the next step is to determine how many licenses will be issued. This year the recommended license allocations were available April 20 and they were approved on May 3 or 4. That leaves 4 weeks until the draw. So what else does CPW need to do prior to the draw? I am assuming I must be missing something. If not, in the future why not move the draw up 4 weeks so applicants can find out sooner and CPW gets paid 4 weeks sooner?

Have CPW call the California Fish and Wildlife Dept and ask them how they get the results out within 10 days after the draw deadline!! It's about all they do right!

Several states get it done in a month or less, so I'm not sure what the hold up is. 10 days is impressive though. NM was right at 4 weeks, and I felt good about that.

We used to say they want to keep our money as long as possible, but we can't say that anymore.

The western states take our applications before they have done their animal counts so that's part of the reason.

Do they also have to check to see if you're eligible to have a license (owe child support or other situations where you're behind on government mandated payments)?

Texas has it's draws in the late summer/fall and they post results in less than 24 hours most of the time.

Colorado does not finalize and approve the final game numbers until the May commission meeting.

Application deadline in April, Tag allotment approval in may and drawing by beginning of June.

About the only thing to change would be moving the application deadline back, but there are arguments for keeping it where it is as well.

Colorado does not finish doing spring game counts until mid April. Unlike a lot of states they at least attempt to see what the total winter kill is before issuing tags.

What does it matter?

Elks,

So what happens between the May 4 tag allotment approval and June 4-8 draw notification?

It matters for various reasons. For one, depending on how I do drawing in CO would influence whether I burn my WY antelope points or not. Then the main reason, I am impatient and just want to know what I have to look forward to in CO this fall.

Yup.....^^^^^

We used to have the backdoor to look at. We lost it with the new system.

We know they can mess up the draw, as they did on the deer draw a few years back, with many applicants able to see via backdoor that they drew, but finding out shortly later that the results were incorrect due to errors in the draw on the part of CDPW. This is why the CDPW did everything they could to take away any possible backdoors thereafter. And it is also why they've apparently set a strict policy of sticking to the posted results dates. No matter if they get the draw done early, along with all the associated audits and double-checks far in advance, it seems they have a hard policy not to reveal the results prematurely. Later, you can check to see when the draw was actually done, by looking at the Hunt Recap reports which show the print date/time in the upper right hand corner.

By the way much of the blame for these later results dates can be blamed on us, the applicants. That is because back in the days of backdoors, hundreds of us simply couldn't resist calling CDPW right after the backdoor was out, to ask if we really drew. A completely un-neccessary annoyance imposed on the people answering the phones, no doubt. In that way, our group stupidity and impatience cost us.

So is the previous backdoor method no longer available as I hadn't seen anything but I haven't searched? Had a NR friend asking about it today!

Thanks DW. Perhaps CC hits might be the 1st notice that you drew a tag? Since this is the 1st year we'll see how they do that.

You can still check your points which might hit before the CC hit. Not sure, just guessing. We'll know soon.

we just gonna have to wait till the post the results. With Sheep and Goat there was no advance credit card charges. same with points.

Thread reminds me of the old joke about how to keep a jackass in suspense....

Haha not a thought for me this year. Put in for all points only due to other hunt draw result expectations. Usually don't do that.
