I drew a 3rd season Colorado tag in unit 62. I've heard mixed things about the unit and a lot depends on the weather. Anyone had hunted this unit? Any success? What can I expect? Looking to do some scouting, any areas that are better to focus on? As well as areas to camp? Also looking for area to hike and get away from roads and people. Any help or info would be great thanks.

Unit 62 is one of the most popular elk units in the state, and fairly few amount of points to draw for mule deer. Probably not going to get much info on a forum like this. I would call the DOW officer for the area, probably be your best luck on getting any valuable information.

I believe Hasbean hunted the unit either 2nd or 3rd season last year and might have some opinion. It was very warm and dry last year in 61/62.

I just got back from there. Have hunted it many times. It is as dry there as I've ever seen it. We've killed some good deer off of 409, 420, North Bench, Corral, 408.1A,Black Point and Long Point areas. That will give you a good start. Again though it is dry. They had hardly any snow and the ponds are dry already. Helped cowboy pull four cows stuck in the mud in one water whole off of Brushy. Didn't see many deer but did see two really big bucks. It hasn't been very good there the last couple years compared to others. Hard to see animals through all that oak this time of year though. Yes there are a lot of hunters. Most are elk hunters. We find that the end of the season is better when the crowds leave. If you only plan on hunting say five days make it the last five if you can. Some in our party don't plan on getting there until Monday for that reason. I'll be there third also. Good luck.
