What some input on a decent unit to hunt 2nd season for bull elk. This will b my first time hunting out of New Mexico. Thought I'd give Colorado a swing. If anyone can point me in a direction to a unit to study I would be greatly appreciated. Anything and everything will help Thanks, Roughneck.

My advise would be to get a leftover 1st rifle for units 11,12,23,24,33,34. There are usually several hundred or thousand leftover over after the draw. I don't have any specific hotspots or units to share (Not my unit or hotspot anyway)but this tag is good for those units and a couple more. There will be alot of hunting pressure there but also alot of elk.

Well I only can get off for the second season. I know nobody is welling to give up good hot spots. . I just want to have success not looking for a 350 or 400 bull. I just want an opportunity to hunt Elk and Harvest. since I can't seem to draw a tag here in New Mexico.
Thanks,
Roughneck

Depending on where you're coming from in NM, anywhere in the south san juans could be a place to start. 2nd season is tough, basically trying to get in between elk escaping pressure and where people don't go. It's fun, but frustrating at times. It is almost entirely weather and pressure dependent, so get there a day or 2 early to find what roads are open, find some grassy areas with aspens without too much snow, use the hunting atlas to locate migration routes, and hike farther than the next guy. A legal bull 4pts on a side shouldn't be passed up if you want to go home with meat. Good luck!

10/4 we are traveling from Southeast New Mexico. We won't be able to go any earlier. We will start hunting the on the 2nd day. Due to work! I would like to hunt any of the units just north of New Mexico. The less travel time the better for us. We plan on hiking in and staying back there for a few days, depending on action. I was looking around units 78, 81 they seem to be big units with not to many roads. We hunt hard every time and yes I will bust an legal bull. Then maybe the second bull we can try for a little bigger one, but we just want to be successful.
