LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-18 AT 01:21PM (MST)[p]I had a tag that wanted pop up last week. I was online and saw it posted as soon as it appeared - and I mean as soon as it appeared not 10 seconds later. It took me a matter of seconds before I got to the hunt code screen and when I typed in the hunt code it was not available. There is no way someone could have completed the buy process in the few seconds it took me to get to the hunt code screen. The only way someone could have done that is if they got the refreshed info faster than I did.

What was odd was, that tag kept showing up for the next 20 minutes or so even though you couldn't buy it. I called CPW and the lady there looked into it and said it was on her screen too and it first showed up at 11:36 or whatever time it was. After we hung up, I looked at my screen and my screen showed 11:38 refresh time. So her screen showed the data two minutes before mine did which got me thinking whether the refreshed info does indeed become available at different times for different people. With that in mind I have a couple of questions.

1) What time does your computer show when refreshed? Mine is always two minutes before the 5's. For example at 11:05, my data refreshes and the screen shows 11:03. It stays that way until 11:10 and the new refreshed screen will show 11:08 ...

2) Is it possible that some computers/servers get the refreshed info faster than others? If so, how much faster?

Definitely possible. There are many computers and programs between your computer or phone and the CDOW servers. They don't all do everything the same. Some are slower than others, some try to save bandwidth costs in various ways, etc.
The internet and all the computers tying it altogether are not all created equally.

Also note that on the list it specifically states that due to delays some information may X amount of time old. Also I bet I could be faster than you... There are a few tricks/settings a person can use to streamline the process and make it almost instant. Not to mention if you server is faster or slower...

Yep I agree.....

I frame/ build homes for a living, kind of hard to check your phone every 5 minutes in my trade. Wish it was one day a week at a certain time of day.

Is there any way we can influence how CPW issues leftover tags? This shotgun approach is inefficient and does not provide equal opportunity.

I personally like the way it's done now. I think it's one of those deals where you either like it or not based on whether you can keep checking for tags on your phone or computer or not.

I don't like the system either as I don't have access to the list very often. Maybe if they updated the list daily at a set time it would be better. My computer is 2 minutes behind the posted list time also. I have been lucky and have picked up a tag two years in a row. Today I checked the list at lunch time, nothing good. I refreshed once and the buck tag I was hoping for popped up. Not a high demand tag but still a 4 PP 3rd season tag in the unit I'm over the counter elk hunting. Just lucky I guess.

I have given up. I've litrally looked at 100?s of tags and within seconds they r all gone. I can't explain it but it seems there must be a ton of ppl trying to still get a tag is my only explanation. I've watched it for a month now and every time they r gone within seconds!

Despite our disagreements on whether CPW is doing a good/bad/ugly job, this is one area I agree with you. At least you would know if "your" tag ever came up.

Ah gruff I doubt we disagree on the overall job they're doin. They just dont have a good handle on how to deal with CWD, no one does for that matter. My problem is they want to continue to do what they've tried and didn't work, expecting different results. We both know what that's the definition of. Nice goat by the way! Hopein to pull a rabbit out of the hat myself a week from tomorrow on a returned tag I picked up on leftover sale day.

I can't figure it out either, seems like some guys are dialed in though because it seems like the tags are gone before they post.

I like how all the E1r, sheep, goat, and moose tags are coming on after the season has opened. Must be nice to work in a cpw office.....

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-18 AT 08:53PM (MST)[p]Had a long informative talk with the lady at cpw who actually enters all the returned tags to the leftover data base.

They get turned in at various field offices . Once the field offices get a bundle of returned tags together ( probably once a week) they then forward the returned tags to the main office , where they are added to the leftover data base. Tags added to the data base this week will pop up randomly for sale the following week on the list .

Sounds a little archaic. What happens if the stage coach breaks down between the field office and downtown Denver?

Do you know if this lady is single?
