Picked up a tag for this unit 3rd season mule deer. It will overlap a NV deer hunt I have, but, excited to have it.

I like Nat Geo maps a lot, and have the La Garita Cochetopa Hills map and it seems to cover lots of it.
Is there a good map for this area someone could recommend. Only need topo, public/private and relevant roads/trails.
Thanks

I guess I should have specified paper map. I have Onyx, but, like a paper map as well. Thanks for the response though.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-18 AT 11:03AM (MST)[p]There is a station... USFS??...about a mile west of town that may have topo maps. If not, the walmart in Alamosa or the CPW office outside of Alamosa/Monte Vista will.

I got mine from the forest service in saguache a few years ago, they're not a typical foldable one but they had them printed out on 11x17

Thanks, I ended up getting DIY hunting maps. They were pretty good.

Ate the tag. Best buck I ever saw was maybe 160 on a good day. I could never get ahead of the learning curve. First few mornings were wasted hiking into something that was not what I thought it would be.
I would like another run at it some time.

Paul,
I have the 3rd season 68, 681 tag this year. Weather looks to be shaping up pretty good for it. Want to see if you could share what you felt was not effective last year, be it tactics, elevation or location.
I have some starting areas picked out that I scouted in early October that didn't have many deer in them at that time, but will hopefully fill up as weather moves them. Most everything I've looked at is between 8-10,000 feet. Thanks.

I never saw a buck I wanted to shoot. I spent some time in that poison gulch and Nolan gulch area. above hwy, also down in some state land southern end. Saw plenty of deer in all those areas, just needed Mr. Big to come around and he never did for me. Does look like the weather may get them going for 3rd season.

NFS map, OnX maps
Colorado has a new app COtrex. ( free download ) it will help with roads
and trails also has all the trail numbers
You can also make tracks and save them to phone
Check it out on YouTube

Thanks Paul. Looked at those areas too. Just like always, seems to me its about being in the right place at the right time to find a big buck.
