I have 19pts as a non resident in colorado for elk. looking to get out of the points game looks like I could draw a second season rifle tag I will be 65 years old when I go on this hunt so this is it for me. Looking to do a guided hunt as I live in Michigan anyone done this hunt and any suggestions on outfitters. Could also draw a muzzleloader tag not to keen on the restrictions. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally I would do rifle and go with Mike Lawson at Trophy Class Outfitters.
He has his own private property and also Fesslers Ranch. Prime country and big Bulls.

I second the muzzy hunt get good with a peep sight and go with a good guide. Biggerstaff will get you on good bulls.

If it is your one time go big and have the hunt of your life...

So there you go!
They all have prime property and those are the best there is.
Decision time now.
I own property in 40 and know the unit like the back of my hand.
This will be the last prime tag that you will get so let me know if you have any more questions.

I was in your situation this year with 19 NR points for elk. Took the advice of Huntnfool and went with an outfitter in unit 20 on a muzzy tag that only took 9 points to draw so I burned 10 points. Long story short, the rut was late and no bugling so I settled for a 275 bull but it was my first bull ever so I have mixed feelings. I would go rifle if I were you.

Truth be told you burned a pile of points and trusted the opinion of someone from out of state whose probably never even stepped foot in the unit, not many people who know their way around colorado elk hunting wouldn't advise you to dump 19 points on a unit 20 muzz tag. Really puzzled why they turned you away from unit 40 or 61.....

I archery hunted with Mike Lawson but it was a long time ago I believe around 2005 so a lot could have changed. However I will say he was a quality guy and I saw a ton of elk/bulls. I wouldn't hesitate using him again but things have gotten out of my price range so now I'm trying to figure out what to do with 13 non res point.

Good luck but Mike is a worth serious consideration.

Just talked to Mike filled for next year no opening till 2020 bummer. This is getting very frustrating waited 19 years for this and can'y hardly find a hunt. Options are getting slimmer any body that got's any suggestion please chime in.

It's risky but I'd apply and stay in touch with multiple outfitters. It's not uncommon for a booked client not to draw or cancel and create openings which are tough to fill when you're talking unit 40.

Wait? You waited 19 years for a tag and then try to book an outfitted hunt in one of the premier elk units in CO on less than a years notice and are frustrated with the lack of availability? Maybe you should of used the last 2 years of your 19 year wait to research where you wanted to hunt. Sorry I'm not feeling sorry for you. Good luck though.

might want to take a look at unit 76 , give long ridge outfitting a try, their good people. Its one of most scenic areas I've been to in colorado

I would book with Mike Lawson. It isn't unusual for good outfitters to be booked two years in advance. The reason he is booked two years in advance is that he won't overbook.

But I would recommend the muzzleloader over second rifle. I have been there. If you want a little more information send me a PM.

Isn't 2V Outfitters Ranching for Wildlife property? Can you hunt on a RFW property with a draw tag?

Mike Lawson's outfit is top notch. I've hunted with him twice, and I would second the advice to hunt in '20, if you decide fore sure which outfitter.

Heck, I may be hunting Deer with you there, in '20 as well.

NRs cannot draw RFW tags.

I also would go with Trophy Class Outfitters in 2020. I hunted with him in 2015 and had an awesome hunt. It was a first season rifle hunt. He and his guides were standup guys!

Yes, you can hunt on a Ranching for Wildlife ranch with a tag you drew in the non-resident draw. You just can't apply for a public draw RFW tag as a non-resident.

Thanks cowhitey. That' the question I was asking. So if you draw a non-resident tag in the unit an outfitter like 2V Outfitters might give you a better deal than the $15,000 RFW tags they have. but you would be restricted to the season that you drew.

WVHUNTER,

You'll have to give them a call. I'm "assuming" they would give you a better deal than $15K if you didn't need a landowner voucher if they had room for you during the season you drew your own tag in.

Hello coloradoman--
I've never been to unit 40. I've heard of fine deer & elk hunting there, but lots of private lands too that can/do limit access. You have 40 acres which is a big plus & lots of experience there too. I'm trying to decide if the deer situation & elk too is something I want to try there-- I have 10 deer points & 13 elk points. What do you think-- one or both species ? Early elk ? Early deer maybe ? To avoid the many elk hunters ? I drew 61 elk 2 nd rifle in '18 but had to turn it back due to a leg problem plus the fires &'drought uncertainty problems. Your thoughts would be very appreciated. ? Thanks much !!! I'm 71 years young-- ?
