Do you think a licensed man shot it, then saw it wasn't big and walked away? Or just a poacher shooting for fun but didn't wanna pack meat out?

It's a shame for sure since many of us wait 20+ yrs to carry a gun there. I hope they catch them.

Probably your first scenario unfortunately. I come across a couple every year. Some guys cant shoot, some cant track. Some think if they dont tip right over they missed and go on to the next without lookin. Hopefully they're caught.

I could see one elk, but two makes things a bit more fishy since they were near each other.

Coulda been bang flop. Sees elk still standing, bang flop. Walks over sees 2 dead bulls and instead of having the courage to face the music cowardly walks away.

Some here in Iowa shoot and leave them there till spring, then claim they found a dead head while antler hunting, cut the antlers off and sell them.

I'm a little familar with the Sanborn Park area, easily accessible from the south end of the unit, very drivable roads and the timber is not very thick. I have a hard time believing these shootings occured during the daylight hours.

This line in the press release caught my eye.

The loss of two bull elk in prime breeding age is especially troubling because of struggling elk populations in Colorado, Lewandowski said.

I was not aware that elk populations are struggling in Colorado. There was recently an article in the Denver Post about calf mortality in the SW part of the state. Maybe someone can fill me in.
