Unit 40

I was wondering if anyone had any info on properties with trespass fees in unit 40 for deer during the 2nd season. Or if anyone had info on how the hunting on the public ground is, mainly regarding access points. I typically hunt with a gps with a chip, so I can work around private property when needed.

Any general info would be appreciated. I have hunted units 18,5,25,26 & 33 and would share info on these also. Would prefer to make contact through PM.

Thank you,
Jody

A lot has been written on this unit. I've only hunted it for elk and this unit is heavily private and the outfitters are very protective of their properties and hunts. Maybe deer is different for elk but you may be hard pressed to find a hunt that is not guided there. Good luck hopefully some other members know something I don't.

As mentioned above I doubt you'll find a trespass fee hunt in 40. Outfitters and hunters pay big $ for guided hunts and tend to have most of the prime elk and deer habitat leased out. It's possible to piece together patches of public but it can be frustrating watching critters on the wrong side of the fence. It sounds like you have OnXMaps?.which you will definitely need.

I myself would do 3rd season.
Big bucks in 40 on public land is doable if you put in the time and effort. It does take a lot of both.
I personally know of 4 big bucks killed this year mine included.
One over 170"
2 over 180"
One over 210"
They are out there you just have to find them!

As an example, the buck I ended up killing I found him in July with a true toad.
I watched them on and off all summer and fall and finally found him on the last day 10 miles from where I first found them in the summer. The monster wasn't with him that I could see.

I don't know where you live so if you can't be there every week or 2 guided would probably be your best option.

Anyone one have thoughts about a third season elk hunt in this unit looks like only tag I could draw besides muzzleloader which i'am not real excited about because of the equipment you have yo use.

Is it really worth waiting on third season when as a non rez I could hunt the unit 3 times in second season for every once I could draw 3rd season????? I think I would rather hunt 2nd season three times as often

I have 19pts as a non resident this is my last go around might as well try to make the best out of a bad situation as point creep is killing me never will try first and way to many points for any other unit kind of just sucks

Thanks for the respones. It looks like unit 30 may be a better choice for me. Good luck to everyone in the drawings.
