Hi I'm from Colorado I'm a resident getting my tag for unit 51 this season I would like any information on this unit for elk I have no pp and this will be my first hunt. If you can information on how to hunt this area or where to start looking for elk. Thanks.

Like I mentioned in your other post. Look at the draw odds closer. Unit 51 had 8 people draw the first rifle with 0 points out of 27 who applied. As a result you only have a 30% chance if everything stays the same as last year. If a couple others apply, then you odds go down.

First thing you need to know is odds of drawing.

Last year people with 0 points have only a 32% chance of drawing a bull tag. So you can't plan on going for sure with 0 points.

I know it says 30% chance for residents, but when you factor in NRs (1 of 2 drawn at 0 points) that means overall it was 32%. Not much difference, but slight.

But there was a 100% draw a cow tag. If you are just getting started, I would go for a cow tag to get your feet wet and the odds of harvesting an elk are better too.

Even if you don't draw the unit you have decided on you should hunt an OTC unit anyway and learn about elk hunting. For a resident it is cheap. As you learn you will also find out that you can apply for the unit you want and gain a preference point (assuming you don't draw your first choice) AND draw a second choice hunt and use it. You can also hunt elk twice a season in Colorado if one of those tags is a ?B list? tag. Don?t get stuck on the idea that you have to draw ?your? choice in order to hunt elk. Get out there and do it.

You could put in for a cow tag as 1st choice: 100% draw last year

Or you can put bull as 1st choice and put a cow tag as a second choice for 51.

Last year, you would have had a slight chance (11%) for 1st rifle and 100% chance or second rifle if you put cow as your second choice.

I Live in unit 51. Do you have much knowledge of the unit? There is actually very little public land in 51 that holds elk. With that said. A cow tag or bull tag for 2-3 season is pretty easy to get. If not you can probably get one off the left over list. I would personally look at better units unless you have access to some private land.
