Start off by looking at last year draw report and make a list of units that 0 to draw. If it took 1 to draw then you will have to calculate odds. Realize that in the stats, if 1 person out of 1000 drew it is reported the same as if 999 of 1000 drew. Meaning that just because it took 1 to draw it does not mean you will draw with one.

Then from that list look at the individual units on the Colorado parks and wildlife "interactive Map" to see the over all land ownership. Find a unit with ample public and go hunt.

The truth is there are a dozen hunts plus that match your question. To get any sort of decent answer, do some research and narrow your list to 4-5 units then ask again.

I live in Adams city and I'm willing to travel to hunt areas 6 hours away not to far west but also not past areas 60 south and not farther than unit 12 and under north

LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-19 AT 09:04AM (MST)[p]North and south of the area from Eagle to Grand Junction along I-70 holds a lot of deer. Get on CP&W and look at stats for those units Also the Rifle to Craig to Meeker area is an area known as the deer factory. So look at those units surrounding that line as well.

No magic formula. Just find a unit/units that you can draw and has decent success rates and go hunt. Learning the area over several years is the only path to success. Some people like it solo, but I always prefer to hunt with a friend. So once you settle on an area, you might try and find someone on here that might let you tag along or someone in your hometown area that hunts and ask them to go as well. Some of my best hunting buddies have come from work, church, etc.

Also, have a back up plan. The odds can change year to year, so a unit that was a guaranteed tag with 1 point last year, might not be this year. You can put a doe tag as a second option, if there are extra doe tags in that area. Then even if you can't draw a buck tag this year, you can learn the area and come home with some meat.

Welcome. Are you a new hunter? Get ready for a life change of addiction. In my brief research you have about 30 options. 3 areas stood out to me. Units 14, 77-78-771, unit 211. It depends on how how much scouting you want to do this summer. If you can go camp and check out those areas. Google earth, toprut.com and onx maps are good resources. Tons of online articles for tips to hunting mule deer. Get high on a ridge or point before daylight and glass as the sun comes up facing west is the basic rule. Feel free to ask questions and most guys here will offer advice.

Also keep in mind that alot of units especially in the north west part of the state are migratory units, So scouting this summer will be primarily to learn the pay of the land and places to camp. You will see next to no deer during the summer in these areas but hundreds in the same area when November/Dec come around. This is where doing your home work in the statistics and harvest reports comes into play.
