Hi I'm going hunting for elk this year for for elk any ideas what elk hunting units are good for elk? I'm a resident of Colorado and haven't hunted elk before I would like any feedback since I haven't harvested an elk before and would like to go home with some meat to put in my fridge. Thanks. I am also from Adams so I'm not trying to go any higher than Gmu 60 or to far west and not lower than Gmu 12..

Throw a dart at the map and go hunting. Most people are pretty tight lipped on OTC elk areas in Colorado. Invest in something like ON X maps and freezer because most wouldn't recommend storing it in a fridge.

Guys are very protective about elk spots. On CO fish and game website start looking at success rates and units that you had mentioned. Pick a couple then go scout them this summer. Getting boots on the ground is one of the best parts of scouting. Good luck.

If you seriously think people are going to willingly give out places they have years invested into, so that you can go hunt them with out paying the same dues all of us had to in order to be successful you're sadly mistaken. I get that you're new at this and excited to jump into it and that's great but there are some moral codes about asking for spots, especially on an Internet forum you need to learn that we as hunters have. Some guys might be crazy enough to spill the beans on stuff regarding otc elk hunting though. I would recommend getting a 2019 biggame brochure and getting your head wrapped around the otc elk units and spend some time this this summer learning them, don't worry about applying for anything other than getting another preference point and go buy yourself a 2nd or 3rd season OTC bull tag and hunt a unit you have spent some time in over the summer. Don?t in the least bit expect it to be easy. It might honesty take you multiple years before you are successful at harvesting an elk if you choose to go at without an outfitter or a hunting partner who is experienced.

Oh ok I had a buddy who took me last year hunting and we hunted unit 54 but did only two days of hunting do to a buddy having a family emergency and ending the trip for everybody we had seen a couple cows within shooting range on opening day but then again hunters opened fire a mile away and the elk got spooked

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-19 AT 12:31PM (MST)[p]Now we are getting somewhere! You CAN draw unit 54 first rifle elk with 0 points! Since you are already familiar with it and saw elk you should go back there. There are plenty of elk there.

I have been on Elk hunts where I did not see an elk for a week So if you saw elk you are ahead of the game. 54 is a good unit and the code is EM054O1R
