Its time to whack a bar!! I never have been much interested in bears which is kinda odd as I pretty much like hunting everything else and love hunting new stuff.

Time to change that and word on the playground is there are lots of the toothy critters running round that neck of the woods. There is a young guy I have been mentoring that just got out of the Army Rangers and now he has the bug and is nutz for hunting so we will be hunting together.

I have about 5 points I think, but not sure if you can get it on a second choice (TOPRUT.com does not list bear draws) as its now a "b" license and theoretically could hold two licenses, but one will be enough.

We will be hunting with scoped bang sticks. I have never stepped foot in the unit but guess the drill is kinda find a high draw and wait or try or get ona gut pile, and have heard of several people calling them in while calling elk. Love to communicate with some elk hunters and we could turn them onto big bulls we see and they could turn us on to bears and gut piles.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Not much to it really. Find a high point and glass.. being able to shoot long range helps a lot because they don't stick around long moving in and out of the oak brush.

Any idea what they eating that time of year? Also that should be turkey country is it worth it to get a tag for incidental sightings???

They are eating whatever is most available to them. Dead cattle, elk gut piles, berries, acorns etc. Biggest thing I've found with hunting bears is still hunting and moving a lot is very unproductive, especially in thick country. Like I said before, get to high points, spend hours on the glass and be ready to set up and shoot quickly. The further you can effectively shoot the better because they don't seem to stick around long and let you make an hour plus long stalk through thick and loud oak brush.

Colorado that is Golden advice...of course the brush still has it leaves on during all September and cover as much ground with glass and eyes and ready to drop the hammer...

I have hunted 61 a few times. If it is hot and dry try to find an isolated pond or water source with some fresh tracks around it. If you are patient enough to sit a few evenings you most likely will get your chance...Bears water daily in the fall.

I'll be there the first week, with the same tag. Let's touch base and see if we can help each other a bit.

I've spent a bit of time in the unit, but not with a Bear tag. Colorado Boy's advice is pretty solid for Bears, in general, I think.
