Unit 40 deer question

Between myself, Dad, and brother we have hunted unit 40 3rd season, 4 times. I should draw this year. I have some questions about the unit that I would love to discuss with others that have hunted it. PM me if you have hunted it and are interested in discussing your experience, thanks!

I've left my experience in several other post so will keep it short. I think my first hunt was 2006 and it was really good and we took 3 nice bucks in the 157, 171 and 180 and tons of deer. My next hunt I believe was 2014 and it was not good at all. I couldn't even believe I was in the same unit. I also could draw this year but am debating it now. Good luck.

Thank you callsalot. I am in the exact same boat. I have seen it pretty good and I have seen it downright awful. I'm guessing you had snow and cold weather in 2006?

No we didn't have snow, matter a fact it was downright pleasant. I remember calling the Biologist since it was the first time I'd been there and he said I will never had seen so many deer. And Garth Carter from the Huntin Fool said that year no matter how many points you had to burn'em because he hadn't seen CO. so good in many years. They were both right. However I think it was 2006 but it could have been 2005 or 2007 I can't remember for sure.

Schoolhouse Griz, I hate to admit when I make a mistake but I can't help myself I screwed up on this. I hunted unit 40 for elk and the post I put here was my experience for unit 70 deer. How I got the elk and deer units crossed I don't know but don't pay any attention to my words because they related to 70 not 40. Sorry.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-19-19 AT 09:35PM (MST)[p]Haha, no worries, thanks for letting me know! My brother will draw that elk tag soon. What did you think of that hunt? PM me if you want, thanks!

2006 was a great year in Colorado for deer all around. Pretty much the peak of that mini "good ol days" era we had for a few years there , prior to the 2007/08 winter. Man it was good deer hunting there for a few years ??

I sent you a PM. Not a lot of info since it's been a few years since I've been in there hunting deer.
I lived in Unaweep for 12 years (moved away in 2011) and did a lot of elk hunting there through the years but not as much for deer.
Hope the info helps a bit.

Schoolhousegrizz,

I'm a do it yourself type hunter but the unit 40 elk hunt was my one and only outfitted hunt. The unit has a lot of private and my buddy that put in with me accidentally put himself as a resident when he wasn't so didn't get drawn so I was solo. After a lot a research I opted for a guided hunt due to so much of it being private with "if i remember his name right" Mike Lawson. Ton's of elk, he ran a solid outfit and lots of 300- 310 bulls. I was trying to get something of 330+ which we only saw a couple of so I went home with zip but was still fun and if you are OK with a 300 bull with an outside chance of 330+ it's a fun place to go. This was an archery hunt by the way.
