Unit 16A

You will either need to be an excellent hunter or lucky to be successful, even more so if you are looking for a mature buck. It was the second worst success rate rifle mule deer hunt in the state last year, and has been in the bottom few for several years for a reason. Most of the locals won't hunt it anymore. Too many tags and lions. Herd is down. I've been up in the higher elevations probably 15 times this summer scouting for my elk hunt and have yet to see a buck this year up top. They do tend to stay in the mid to low elevations in the unit however from what I've seen. Focus on water.

AZ4life, I was up high once this summer, nonetheless, no elk sightings. Have you been over in the Dean Peak area? What type of regrowth has happened? I've have couple areas I'm checking out for deer; McCracken and Tompkins.

Greg

I was on deans in April or May and there was no regrowth at all in the pines areas of the burn. I'm going in the morning actually, so i'll let you know. The lower elevations had decent new growth even back in May, so I would def. check out the north side of deans mid elevations for deer on the burn in case they are all over they chowing down.

Hunted the McCracken in January for javelina & deer did not see anything. We hunted for five days & the only deer we saw were down on 17 mile road by signal, small forky & 4 does. The only javelina we saw were off chicken springs & couldn't get a shot.
We have been hunting 16a for quite a few years the deer population is way down!!!! We have given up hunting this unit due to many tags & no deer. IMHO too many predators & people running around out there. Water & food are not an issue.

Hey guys, thanks for the update. I haven't been in this unit for 5 or 6 years . . . sounds like things have gotten worse, not better. It was my 4th choice this year. A challenge . . . better than sitting home.

AZ4life, thanks for the PM. Which elk hunt, ML or archery? I'll PM you one of my tailor-made study maps for the area; its old-school, yet you may find it helpful. Either way let me know what you think.

Hi

I have drawn an archery tag for elk Arizona unit 16A for 2016.
Was your hunt successful?
I hope so.
Looking for direction.
Any tips you wouldn't mind sharing?
Did gmoney get you that map?
Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

tntcnc,
Boy do you have your work cutout for you!! My advice scout, scout & than scout some more. This will be a tough hunt for sure. Most of the elk in this unit are up in the Hualapie mountains. It is rugged country. Put boots to the ground before your hunt find water sources as it will be warm.
