For those non-residents who are looking to get a permanent bonus point to help your odds in drawing an Arizona big game tag, the Kingman team will be holding the one-day class on Saturday, January 3, 2015 here in Kingman (100 miles south of Las Vegas in northwest Arizona).

Only requirement is that you must have taken hunter ed in your home state (or any state) since 1980 and you provide a copy of your card to Dave Williams at AZ G&F. Any one 10 years or older can take this class!

Williams can reached to sign up for the class at 623-236-7434. FAX your cards to him at 623-236-7903.

Class will start at 7 a.m. (Arizona time) and will end about 6 p.m.

We will do a "working lunch" to try and get folks out early.

Take this class and graduate--and almost all do--and you'll walk out with a permanent bonus point that WILL be added to your accumulated points for the 2015 elk and antelope draws!

We will talk about how the AZ draw works in detail and explain to you the "new" way that NR's will see bonus points applied starting in 2016.

If you need a good, clean and reasonably priced motel to stay at while attending this class-either Friday or Saturday night, call the Silver Queen Motel at 928-757-4315 and tell them you are there for the AZ Hunter Ed class. You'll get a small discount off the regular room prices if you do. They are right next to the freeway and have a Denny's within 200 yards.

If you have any questions, call me at 928-303-9481 and/or send me an email at [email protected] or call Dave Williams.

This is a little off topic Don but I thought you would have the answer. I will be heading to vegas from Javelina scouting 20C this weekend, Can you cross the Tillman bridge with a weapon in your vehicle? I read somewhere about a security checkpoint that does not allow weapons to cross the bridge? any insight would be great!
Thank you,
Todd

Cost is $8, collected at the door. Lunch is $5 or $6. It is optional.

No problem bringing firearms across the Tillman Bridge either.

What if I was born in 1962 and had a license In Utah ! Since I did not need the class because of the year I was born Can I take your class still ?

Nope, you MUST have a hunter ed card from another state (since 1980)in order to take this class. No matter your age or hunter status.

Hey got a call from a guy coming in on Friday afternoon to Las Vegas who said he is interested in splitting the cost of a rental car if anyone is interested. He will be coming back early Sunday morning.

Changes that may be important to NR hunters include the elk structure changing for 2015 and in 2016, the top NR bonus point holders will see a reduction to 5% of the tags available in the bonus point draw, while the remaining 5% will be available to all NR's in the general draw.

Example. I'll use the Arizona Strip. Right now there are about 140 NR's who are in the max point pool for deer. Most of them are applying for the Strip rifle tag as their first choice.

Assuming there are still going to be 75 tags available in 2015 for this hunt, that means that UP TO 10% or 7 tags would be available for those NR's in the first draw, which is called the 20% pass draw.

The first 15 tags will be issued to only those sportsmen(Resident or NR) who have max bonus points. But then the under the 10% rule, only 7 of those first 15 tags can be drawn by a non resident. 7 is the max that can be issued to NR's.

It has played out over and over that since the NR deer pool has way more sportsmen in it than residents with max points;, that all 7 of those NR tags available under the 10% cap will be issued to those who were drawn out in that 20% pass draw.

That then means that no NR, regardless of the amount of points they had, would be able to draw a deer tag on the Strip AFTER that first pass draw.

In 2016 that will all change. The top NR bonus point holders will be able to get UP TO 5% of the total tags offered for that hunt, while the remaining 5% of the tags AVAILABLE CAN be drawn by any NR, no matter how many bonus points they have in the second draw.

I'll explain all of this and show some models on how this will work in class, but that is it in a nutshell.

We will also go over in class the details on how the Arizona draw actually works, and hopefully explain some draw strategies that may be helpful to those attending.

If you got any questions, call me.

Hi Don, I would like to take your NR hunters safety course in 2015, but the January date is difficult for me to make (or may already be full as you stated). Will there be another hunter safety course taught before the deer draw in time to apply the hunters safety point for the deer draw in 2015? Thank you.

Yes, we will have another one in April 2015 at the same facility at the 7 Mile Hill Shooting Range in Golden Valley (Kingman area).

So if I understand correctly, the top NR point holders got screwed so that any NR applicant regardless of points has a chance (albeit mighty slim) at a tag? For guys like me who have a couple under max, the wait for 12AW just got a whole lot longer, if ever.
Was this done to increase applicants/revenue? I'm guessing yes. The money they get year after year from us dedicated applicants wasn't enough. I feel like a jackass. And AZF&G is on my back with a carrot and a fishing pole.

Buck yes you are correct the top point holders get screwed... and so do all other non-residents. In the draw after the 5% bonus pass more than likely non-residents will not draw "up to" their 10% cap (high demand units). Therefore in this new draw system there is a strong chance fewer non-residents will draw. This will definitely extend the time for a non-resident in an upper pool to draw. I have 18 points and would like do draw an early elk rifle hunt. Based on last years odds it would likely take me 5-7 years in the units I am looking at, under the new system 10-14 years (I will be dead). I think the non-residents that are in support of this don't understand it fully.
