Elk Suggestions

I'm a non-resident sitting on 14 elk points. I would enjoy a muzzleloader or rifle rut hunt but not sure I have a chance to draw one. From what I can tell I would have a chance at an archery hunt. Should I wait for a muzzleloader hunt where I'm more confident or risk an archery hunt. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Draw an archery tag and spend more time with the bow in your hand between now and the hunt. More and better choices for archery with 14 points. Non-resident tags could be getting harder to draw in the future with the changes under consideration.

If you are considering an early (premium) muzzleloader hunt, you are probably at least a couple years away..

If you were a bow hunter, you are there already in a couple of good units.

Longer season (14 days vs 7 for muzzleloader)is an advantage.

Another thing to factor in is your age....If you are 55+, then your time is short, if you started early, and you are in your mid 30's, you've got the time to wait for a muzzleloader tag.

Plus next year, the rules are gonna change for the distribution of tags for NR's, so there MAY be the possibility that you could draw a premium muzzleloader tag with where you are now.

This is a decision year for many, and for good reason.

Read the post about the proposed changes...

I WAS IN THE SAME BOAT 2 YEARS BACK, WENT WITH THE ARCHERY HUNT. BEST CHOICE I EVER MADE, WITH A MUZZ OR CENTERFIRE YOU STILL MIGHT HAVE A LONG WAIT AS THOSE LINES MOVE REAL SLOW...................YD.
