23 north september archery

I would kill the first one you see. You may not see another. We'll be waiting on the pics and story. Good luck

Just curious but how many points did you have? I tried for that tag with 17 NR points. I am still in a good place...early unit 9 archery.

Congrats on the tag. Very crowded.Lots of hunters, maybe around 15. Hope to see a good picture from you.

Haha you got what I consider to be the best archery hunt in az. I had the tag 2 years ago and killed a nice 370" 7 point. And as luck would have it my dad drew this year with 6 points! I drew an early archery tag in another unit but am gonna put that off to help my dad. Gonna be a fun year!

You got a great tag. Now you need to take enough time off to get done.

anyone want to throw out some past photos of bulls they took on this hunt? Don threw one up already. Thanks

You have a really good tag and this year should be a great year. Unit 23N is a unit with a lot of action from top to bottom. It has a few big bulls and a lot of bulls between 330-350. The bugling should be off the charts with the early rains we have had. I'm hoping for good monsoon rains that hopefully will hit us hard over the next 30-45 days. I hope you use your points to the fullest and look over a lot of bulls. Don't get in a hurry. In my opinion, it doesn't have the upper end quality like some of the other great units but has lots of bugling and very huntable country! I hope you get a monster.

Yeah Im looking forward to the hunt. Jay when you say there isn't the upper end quality are you talking about there not being as many 400 inch bulls as in say unit 9, which seems to be on a downtrend itself. Im trying to think of a unit I would rather archery hunt for upper end quality and I m struggling to come up with one. I previously had been putting in for unit 9 and unit 1. I have several friends that have hunted in 9 over the last several years, helping others, I believe they know you pretty well and they have said the overall quality continues to slip in 9 and 10. I was on board after the burn for unit 1, but the sheer number of tags has really made that hunt a tough one. 3a/3c continues to slide. So at this point in my hunting career I am actually ecstatic to have the 23 N tag. Sure it isn't easy to come across the true giants in 23 as it perhaps has been in the past in unit 9, but at the same time they are in 23 and more difficult to find in 9 and 10 every year. Honestly, if given the decision to hunt 23 with 15 tags or go do the unit 9 fiasco, i would take 23 all day long. Hopefully, we can find something in the upper scoring category. Hey if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. Then again if we do find them and then go through everything to get on them, I might miss them any way :)) But I'll have a great time trying.

I totally agree with most points you bring up. I think you have a great tag and you could find a giant. I think overall AZ quality is slipping across the board in general. I think AZ will be in peak condition this year as far as antler growth because of the spring moisture we received.

9 and 10 are very arid and 2013 and 2014 were dry years so quality was down. 10 has too many tags in my opinion to be like it was in 2005 when there were only 100 tags. 9 always has some giants but it just is a matter of whether they leave the park or not.

Back to 23. great unit but not known for consistently producing 390 plus bulls. Every year there seems to be one big one around. My experience has most of the big velvet 23 bulls leave to go rut on the reservation.

I just wanted you to have a realistic expectation of what you are looking at. I hope you find a mega bull. My bet is you will see a lot of bulls between 320-350. If you find a giant get on him quick and get him on the ground as they like to travel. I hope you have a great hunt in Arizona and I thank you for supporting our state!

I heard with all the rain this year that all the 320-350 Bulls were going to be 370-400?. Jay, I'm intrigued by your comment that most of the big Bulls leave to rut on the reservation. I had hoped it would be the other way around. Do you think it's because of more cows on the reservation, less hunting pressure, or something else? Do you think they try and go back and forth quite a bit? I'm curious in your experience why do you think that is? Thanks.

I definitely think the biggest bulls leave 23 and head to the reservation to breed cows. It is a sanctuary on the rez with very little pressure. The West end camp rez hunters have a solid 1 to 1.5 hour drive just to access some of the country from the basecamp near Cibeque. I think there are plenty of cows on the rez and very little human interaction and interruption.

They do seem to cross back and forth at times and can be very unpredictable. I believe this year the bulls will be a maximum capacity on their antlers. I do still believe that most of the bulls harvested will be less than 350. I hope I am wrong for the sake of the guys with tags but that is my opinion. I believe 23N is a great unit but I don't share the opinion of others that monsters are around every tree. I would bet that not one bull will be harvested over 400" but a lot of bulls 300-350. Again I hope I am wrong.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-29-15 AT 11:04PM (MST)[p]I believe 2 years ago (2) archery bulls were killed in 23n that went 400"+. I believe Jed Larson and his buddy were the guys. I think a 390"+ will come out of there but it really depends on the hunters who have drawn it thus year. Put certain guys in that unit and big bulls will drop. Unit 21 may be the unit this year to watch for.

yeah you just never know. 15 tags doesn't give a lot of chances for a 400 inch bull. Of course you're right Jay. I think you would be right if you said that about any unit. Most of the bulls will be under 350. Show me a hunt in the state where most of the bulls shot are not under 350. If there are 5 bulls shot over 350 in unit 23 with only 15 tags that would mean 30% would be over 350, that would be incredible for any unit in the country. So I am with you but also would say that applies to most units in the state. Im not going to lie Im a numbers guy, would love to get a 400 inch bull, but am very realistic and have been doing this too long to not be. The odds are not in my favor, but its still a blast trying to find the needle in a haystack. All I can do, like anyone else, is put in my time before and during season and let the chips lie where they may. What ever I am blessed to get or not to get, I'm still going to enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks for your answer and thoughts on the unit Jay; I know you have a lot of experience in there. On a separate note, thanks for your podcasts. I do a lot of commuting for work and have enjoyed listening to them while driving. They are very well done. Good luck on the hunt Tooele. Regardless of size, if the rut is hot, it should be a great time!

Don't sell yourself short, I believe you are in the top 30% of the hunters that drew that tag, so I THINK THE ODDS ARE IN YOUR FAVOR. So go in thinking that way and you will have your chances at a magic Bull.

I believe Jay Scott is correct when he states a lot of bulls leave 23 to rez... I had archery tag in 2009 for this unit and found this to be true....There were days when the bulls were just screaming but it was over fence on rez land. This is not to say that you can't find a huge bull just be willing to look over a lot of bulls and be mobile.....
Good luck......

I killed this bull in 23N in 2013. My dad has the tag this year so we're hoping to find another good one

With the help of Jed larson, Kendal Adair, Scott Clouse after hunting 13 days straight, averaging over 15 miles of hiking a day, I will say it was no cake walk. My biggest day, Jed and I hiked 22 miles. I passed a lot of good bulls and struggled to find exactly what I was looking for, but I did manage to shoot one. A little 388 inch bull, with 60 inch main beams and just a little over 62 inches of mass. So not all the bulls over 330 inches vacated the unit :)

I saw pics of your bull. Congrats on a good one. You ran into my dad a few times down there. He was in the white ford excursion. His goal was a 375"+ bull so he passed on multiple bulls throughout the hunt the biggest being 365 or so. He was bummed he didn't find the big guys but tried hard. It was a really tough year compared to the last 2 I've been down there. Rutting was slow and every bull we checked seemed to be 340-350 or smaller. He said 375"+ or nothing and stuck with it so he knew what he wanted so I'm proud of him for not giving in but sad he wasn't able to get the bull he dreamed of the last 5 months.

Wow, hiking 200 miles in two weeks in itself is an accomplishment all in itself. You either have some great friends or great guides to go through that with you. The bull sounds like it wasn't bad either, but its hard to envision without a picture of him...

Gotcha, one day we had dropped off a mesa and ended up along ways from where we had parked, we ended up walking by the road your dad was camped on. we had walked about 4 or 5 miles of road and he was the only guy that stopped and offered us a ride. Pretty nice guy. No doubt it was a tough hunt this year. I just figure with so much water and feed they were pretty spread out. Funny thing is the bull I killed wasn't one that we had scouted. Just showed up one day. Guess we all deserve a break once in a while.
