hello guys, I drew a November muzzleloader tag for unit 10 this year. I am going to be hunting with steve chappells outfit. anybody ever draw this tag and can shares some experiences with this hunt. whats the country like? what is a good realistic expectation for this hunt. I have been shooting the muzzy and cant wait for November.

You are hunting with 1 of "THE BEST".Come healthy and Ready. This is a general hunt,a 300 plus bull should be doable ... Have "SMOKEPOLE" sighted in for 200 yds.Practice and Practice ... Good Luck,
Bruce & SilverGrand

Agree with Bruce that Steve is a good guy! But I'll bet he'll want you to look for a better than 300+ bull. However Bruce is correct too that is what is going to get hammered by most of the tag holders up there this year that are successful.

Pay the money, hunt Boquillas and have a great time!

Lots of bulls, but most of the big guys will be broken up, so got to be picky.

Good luck and may see you up there!

Thanks guys for the info. I have shot a few bulls so I will be holding out for the biggest we can find. I definitely know I am in goods hands with Steve. I have been shooting the muzzy and trying to work up a good load. I am shooting 84 grains by weight of blackhorn 209 and shot the Barnes 250 grain TE-Z bullets last night. I have the 290 grain TE-Z that I want to try next. I did notice that the blackhorn measure tubes are off a little from their website info. 84 grains was more like 110 grains measured instead of the 120 grains measured on their site. I am shooting a T/C pro hunter FX. want to get a real good accurate load developed at 100 yards then move out to 200 yards and see how she does.

Steve will have you dialed in on some great area's.
Some of out of the way stuff will have lone bulls in looking to put some weight back on before it to late going into winter.
Lots of broken bulls at that time.
Good luck and shoot a big one.

There will be a 340-350 Bull waiting for You.I have the early rifle tag and I will leave those for You ( hopefully ). You have a great guide. You will be in good shape. Growth should be fenominal. Hopefully they don't get broke to bad. I have a 330 on the wall and waited 19 years, so hopping for MR. Biggie. Good luck to You.........BULL!

Thanks largebull, I will gladly take your 350 leftovers lol. Good luck on your hunt also. I hope you shoot a monster. I am 100% confident I am with the best people out there. I have been shooting the muzzy a lot and cannot wait for November to get here. I am going to be making the long drive from Pennsylvania by myself so if I shoot a bull I can bring all the meat back. Big pain flying as all that needs to be shipped and is real expensive. What is the weather like in the unit that time of year?

Cold, Can be freezing at night, Chance of snow, Chance of cold rain, Good trapping weather LOL. Bring your rain gear, Cold weather gear and bring those Cold weather Boots you might need them. You can leave the shorts at home.

Thanks Gator, sounds like the weather when I hunted the late rifle in unit 27 back in 2008. id rather hunt cooler weather anyway. I have good rain gear and good broke in boots.

Sorry folks, someone in the "Rich family" drew this tag; we're sure to have record high temps and wind starting November 6th.

Not sure about your bullet weight choice, but it may be a bit light. Most guys select 350+ grain bullets for elk. Just my opinion. Good luck on the hunt, you are in for a blast!

I have the pro hunter as well, I shoot 100 gr by vol of blackthorn, 250 gr Barnes tmz, and harvestor yellow jacket sabots. 3" groups at 300 yards.

Not saying you don't know what you're doing, except that BP and BP substitutes are measured volumetrically.

Somewhere between 95 and 115 gr of BH209 and that Barnes TEZ 290gr you'll find a sweet spot.

No need for heavier, that load will snuff elk well past 200 yards if you put it perpendicular to 90 degrees thru the boiler room.

that sounds about right Bill. everything I am reading indicates around 110 grains by volume with the 290 tez should be perfect. the 250's shot real well at 100 yards. this week I am going to find the right load for the 290's at 100 yards then start shooting the 200 yard range. I want to be perfectly confident at 250 yards long before I step foot in Arizona this year. takes too long to draw a tag to not have everything perfect. and from what guys are saying with the moisture last year and this year this is the year to have a tag anywhere in Arizona. only 4 months until I start the long drive out.

You'll find perfection near there...I shoot 110 gr by the way out of my Omega. Absolutely hammered a nice NM bull at somewhere around 210 yards.

Just know your real world drop from 175-250 and tape the chart to your stock. It's served me well over the years with 28 of 30 animals never needing more than 1 shot.

I'll be in 4A with an early archery tag and am stoked about the perfect storm of moisture levels too! Also, the Paunsaugunt plateau seems to be getting a bunch of rain (I have the premium rifle deer tag).

It's gonna a be great year for us!!!!

I had that tag in 2013 and was successful. I use Barnes 250 GR T-EZ FB bullets behind 110 GR of Buckhorn 209 out of my Encore. This setup is 200 yard ready. I have taken several animals with this combo and witnessed my buddy take a bull elk as well. I wish you good luck on your hunt. I was able to share mine with family and a new friend.

Nice bull 5 alive. I hope to see one similar. looks like the weather was not too bad on your hunt. I shot the muzzy last week at 100 yards. I settled on 110 grains of BH 209 and the 290 grain Barnes TE-Z. It grouped very well. Now I am off to the 200 yard range to see how she groups. Did you hunt with anybody? did you see lots of elk? the country looks rather open and brushy. definitely not like the country I hunted up in unit 27.
