Question guys...My dad made a mistake and put in for this tag with his 16pts as a NR, he was suppose to put in for the West. First off is there anyway to pull out of the draw or is it worth the 16pts if he draws? Thanks for any and all replies, he's all bent after applying for so long and the possibility of losing them for the mistake.

Mike

No way to withdraw from the draw formally. Only way you may be able to get around it is if you applied with a credit card, then you could purposefully deactivate that credit card that you applied with, so when they do the draw, if they draw him, then the card would not clear, then they would do their attempt to call him to collect for the tag, and you/he could refuse to offer up payment. Only thing is I don't know for certain if you would lose bonus points in that scenario if he was "drawn" initially. I don't think you lose all of them since he wasn't issued a tag, but I don't know. I also don't know what would happen to loyalty for sure in that scenario. I'm sure somebody knows someone that had a credit card problem and lost a tag that way. What happened with points?

I personally prefer the west side, but the east late rifle tag can be a great hunt! A buddies dad has killed some monsters on that side of the hwy!!! Go hunt and have a great time! A late rifle tag will be awesome!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-15 AT 04:29PM (MST)[p]I just re read my post im a little off, a lot actually (I was tired). Problem is his second choice not the first, second choice was 12AW EARLY. So im not real up on understanding the AZ draw concoction. Basically if he doesn't draw the 1st being 12AE Late he may possibly burn the points on the west early hunt as a second choice? Actually thought about closing the card but worried about the contact. Dads 75, would be ashamed to burn all those points on the hunt if its not worth it....its his only shot.

Your Dad should plan on hunting the early hunt in 12aw.A very good chance to draw with that many B.P.Be selective,The "BOONERS" are their even on the early hunts.Good Luck and enjoy the time spent Together ... Bruce & SilverGrand

Yep that changes everything better pack the bags he will draw that tag for sure I think the max point draw was like 7-8 points.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-15 AT 04:02AM (MST)[p]He would would drop two pools back if he cancels the card. The odds are good that they will change the max points draw so only up to half the nonresident quota will be issued in it. So missing this years point and losing the loyalty point may set him back many years. Might turn it to a maybe never for a guy in his mid 70's. He has to make the call, but canceling the card would be be a big setback!

The loyalty point would come back after 5 consecutive years of applying again, 6 draw years from now, not just a one year loss.

I think I would just hunt and enjoy the early hunt if I were in the exact situation. Like Bruce said, they are still in there somewhere.

God bless your dad for wanting to draw a better tag when he is older than 75. I hope I'm able to hunt anything at all when I'm his age in 11 years.

Personally, I'd take the tag, scout for a week or ten days prior to the hunt and stay up there for the whole season.

Take the tag and hunt your guys butts off, If you drop out and drop into a lower pool HE MIGHT NEVER draw a another tag with his age being what it is.

One more thought.... If he draws and hunts this year, he might get the same hunt again with the knowledge he earns hunting this year. Likely, it will be before he draws the late hunt if he drops two pools down!

I've had the early and late 12AW hunts. The biggest buck I ever saw was on an early hunt 4 years ago.

Take as much time off as you possibly can and hunt this year. Have a great hunt and then report back and let us know how it went.

Life is too short to be stuck on the sidelines.

Heres the thing though, with 16 points you can draw that tag any year you want. You may be set back a little on the late hunts, depending on when you want to hunt, you could try for the late stuff for a few years, and grab the early tag when you have a guide lined, up or you have a couple of years of experience going into the unit. Just a lot of points to blow on that hunt, thats it. Sure there is a chance you get a big one, but at the same time the AZGFD has set that hunt up as a meat hunt, so the odds are that is what you will get for waiting 16 years. A meat buck. You can come get one of those down here by phoenix with 0 points.

I say hunt it if He draws. It can be a good hunt. AT his age its not worth waiting unless He is in perfect health. You don't know how long it will take to get the late tag. It could be 10 more years with losing 2 points. Unless He is a Super Human like My Dad who will be 95 in 2 months. He could of gone on most hunts till He was 85. I hope I can do the same but I doubt it. Good luck and Hunt and enjoy. Get as much scouting help as You can for Him................BULL!

I didn't realize your dad was in his 70's. Stay in the draw and hunt hard, you will guys will have a great hunt! Good luck!

Let me offer some food for thought. You dad is 75, and while none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, people in their mid-70s have fewer falls to look forward to than those of us who are younger.

If your dad draws either hunt, the two of you can enjoy a wonderful hunt together. Regardless of whether he kills the biggest buck living on the unit, a nice buck, average buck or NO buck, you can have a wonderful hunt together and create memories that have nothing to do with the size of the buck he might take.

Consider hiring a top quality outfitter and the two of you enjoy a wonderful deer hunt together. Even if you prefer to hunt alone, an outfitter can provide scouting, do whatever camp work you'd rather have his people perform, do as much or as little as you want... And the two of you can enjoy a memorable hunt together that you'll both remember for as long as you live.

Make the hunt about enjoying the entire experience and not just inches.

Very well said CAelknuts! It is easy for us all to get caught up in the quest to harvest a "trophy". We study the success charts, the bonus/ preference point stats, and the record books. But in the end, I would give just about anything to be able to hunt ANYWHERE just one more time with my dad. We hunted the Kaibab together several times and we never did put a tag on one of those true monsters up there! The bucks we did take were all trophy's to me and I will cherish those memories till the day the Good Lord calls me home!
Dad passed away in 1998.
The north Kaibab hunt is always an adventure and an excellent hunt "early or late, east side or west" and, especially up there, you never know when one of those "Monster Mulies' is going to step out.
Let us know how it goes and we would love to see the pictures!

The proposed draw change to limit nonresidents to up to 50% of the 10% cap in the max points round was approved by the commission but the new governor put all new legislation on hold. Odds are really good that it will be the rule soon. That would double the wait to clear pools ahead of him and the years to clear his pool. But it would give some hope of him drawing any tag the first year of implementation. Even one point is a big price to pay, especially at 75....

300MIKE,
So what did you do cancel the card or stay in the draw ? If you stayed in what did you draw ?
