Well things are a little slow at work so I thought I might post a few pic from this weekend.

Let me start with this...

Its is strange to have AZ give me a tag. I have a pending move to DC for work so I have hired Steve Chappell to guide me on this archery hunt. I have talked with Steve numerous times and I think we will have a great hunt together. I am really hoping for a 350 class bull.

I have heard the rain this year has been good so I took a father's day/family trip to Grand Canyon/Unit 9 to take a look around.

I am not sure what it normally looks like but it looks pretty green to me?

We were able to drive around on FS rd. 302 and see a few elk... (full disclosure the close up shots are from inside GCNP)

We saw three good bulls. Two moved away before we could get any pics but the third...

Then my wife reminded me that we have a telephoto lens and...

What do you think this guy will end up scoring?

I am headed back from July 2nd -July 4th. More picture will follow...

310-320 maybe? I'm not great at scoring elk. I hope to get better. I have the early rifle in unit 10 so I'm going to do a lot of looking at bulls between now and then!

I think he will end up around 360 when he stops growing in 4-5 weeks is my guess. You can't really tell this far out.

I drove the 302 road on Saturday afternoon and thought that, while it definitely is fairly green, the monsoon sure is needed as there were quite a few dry tanks. Lockett Lake had water but that was the only water I saw in my limited drive.

You've got a fantastic tag and are going to have a memorable hunt!

Good luck on your hunt. I also drew this hunt with 6 points this year. Hoping for the best. Can't wait to get there.

I was out in 9 again this weekend and I have more pics. I will try to post them in the next couple of days. Just looking around the area. I saw numerous bulls, nothing too big. I got a few good photos of a little bear and a few small bucks. The area looks pretty wet to me with lots of standing water between Valle and Tusayan.

Good luck U4E ! I am holding out for early elk in 9 myself. I don't care how long it takes. You made a good choice with S Chappell.

get out of the pines to find BIG bulls!!!!This is one of the best bull hunts in the state, and you never know when you will see the bull of a life time!!!!

The biggest bull I ever laid eyes or lens on was in the pines on 9. He may not have summered in the pines though.

I am letting the Steve direct the locations of the hunt. I am sure he knows where the big bulls are located. I am simply trying to take in the experience of the unit 9 tag. I had not spent much time in the unit before this season and I am simply enjoying driving around and seeing elk, deer, bear and the canyon. I keep watching the weather to see how the monsoons turn out. Best of luck to everybody this season.

UTAH400.........YOUR IN GOOD HANDS WITH STEVE, I HUNTED UNIT 9 BULL BOW IN 2013. IT TURNED OUT WELL, HE HAS THE BULLS DIALED IN. YOU WILL HAVE A UNIQUE/ INTERESTING HUNT FOR SURE. GOOD LUCK...................YD.

the biggest bull to come out of 9 was taken in the PJ.He scored over 440 and was killed by the gov hunter that year!!!!!I have tape and trail pics of him.He had a nickname of Wilbur!!!!

My hunt is over and I took a decent bull. I had an great hunt and Steve put bull after bull in front of me. I shot my bull at 35 yards on the last morning of my hunt. I am still traveling home and will try to post more as soon as I get settled. I passed on better Bulls during the hunt than the one I took on the last day. There were ups and downs like most hunts. I can't say enough about how great Steve Chappell was to hunt with. He is an exceptional caller and a great person. The guys in camp were all great. In the end...17 points were well worth the expirience.
