Kiabab roads?

Going to start scouting for my archery hunt this week, with all the rain we have received lately was wondering how the roads are when they get wet? Will tire chains help if I get stuck in one of these thunderstorms? Thanks for any advice.

My experience is roads on the plateau are good in rain for the most part. There are some exceptions that get pretty rutted out. Off the plateau on the west or east side it's a different story and most roads are bad. I always carry chains but have. Ever used them. 4wd seems to work fine. Good luck.

Hangfire - Generally the roads on the plateau are passable when wet during the bow hunt - many were graveled during logging activities in years past. The underlying soils are limestone-based & drain well. There a few places where it does get muddy so it's always wise to be prepared. Many of the forest roads washed out in the low country on the west side in Sept 2013 because of some huge late monsoon storms, but they were fixed by the rifle hunts later in Oct & Nov.

Good luck on the bowhunt - I've bowhunted there many times since '71 & can give you a few hints. I'll be there this year again 'cuz I drew an archery tag! You can send a PM if you like.

I agree with the last 2 posts. Ive never had a problem getting around the Kaibab high country in wet weather. Even when the water is standing , its got a solid bottom.
