This year on the North Kaibab, heaven again...

Greetings to all & congratulations to those who drew a Kaibab tag this year. Against the odds as a NR, I drew a 12A archery tag this year (2nd yr in a row). I'm pumped!

During the past few years I've offered to provide some help to 12AW hunters and quite a few of you have asked me to share some pointers about the Kaibab. I've been there with a few hunters and have seen them have some great success. I hope that some of my advice has been useful.

I first hunted there in 1971 and have hunted the Kaibab many times with bow & rifle. I'm 63 so my best years are probably behind me, but now that I'm retired I just can't get enough of the Kaibab (I live about 3 hrs away from Jacob Lake). I've said before that I welcome any opportunity to share some of what I've learned over the years with others. I plan to be on the Kaibab this year during the archery hunt (of course!) and both rifle hunts. If you'd like a little extra help, please send me a message (or PM if you like). I'm not a guide or outfitter, just someone who likes to help. There are others who probably know more about the 'Bab then me, & there are several guides who do a great job on the Kaibab.

Good luck to all!

I'm new to the site. I was lucky enough to get drawn for Kaibab 12a/12b. I'm super excited that I got drawn. I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole. Is there any help on where to get started? I'm not going to be able to scout before the since it's in two weeks. I'm leaving at 3am on Thursday set up camp and try to get some scouting. So I can figure out where to hunt on Friday morning.
Anything will help. Thanks guys

Hi Dan, I had to sign in just to respond to your message.I first read your message to help other hunters back in 2013 and now I could use some help.Arizona resident, first hunted Kaibab back in 1966 and several times since then but always the west side.Three other "old guys" and I got drawn for Early East Rifle tags and could use some help.We will have 2 wall tents,2 mules,2 quads and plenty of room if you need a place to hang out. Thanks

rockymtnhunter and others, Am stuck in a very unusual and personally embarrassing situation which doesn't bear repeating at this time. Have bow hunted only for the past 40 years. Am retired. Love to hunt. Always do my own research kind of person. I almost always make a separate trip to prescout a new area or go early enough before the season and scout then. This year it can't happen and my original plan which alludes to my first sentence here may be leaving me with egg on my face and a tag in my pocket! I scouted the Kaibab about ten years ago. Mostly just drove the area and of course visited the park. I have the maps of the Plateau, 12AW and 12AE, and an archery tag for the unit. That is all I have. I know nothing more about where to even start except hunt where the lupines grow! Please just steer me in some direction and hopefully not off some cliff which is what I deserve for not being prepared for where to go on this hunt. Do I hunt near Jacob Lake or do I go closer to the park boundary which is higher in elevation? Do I hunt miles west of Highway 67 or closer to it? etc. See I'm lost. Thanks for any help received.

First, hope all goes well with your wife and the appointments. I'm 66 and my wife 65 and "appointments" we don't look forward to, even routine ones. I go to get my teeth just cleaned, they feel fine, next then you know I'm getting a crown and a flippin "God excuse the express" root canal!! Then, my dentist buys a new 4x4. ??? Oh well.
Just got to pick your brain a little. I don't mean to pry.
1. Based on what you said, there are probably deer and good places to hunt west of road 462 too, correct?
2. Tell me, please, "road hunting" happens, but don't do it.
3. I will hunt from the opener straight through to August 31st. 10 days. Does this hunt really get better later in the season?
4. When does the first group exodus of weekend warriors leave?
5. Approximately, very general, where do you camp? In the National Forest? Safe to leave your camp?

Again, thank you. And Bless You.

On calling you, probably won't am very independent. Was raised in a family philosophy that said "If you can't do it by yourself, it can't be done." So, have become more than independent, more reclusive. But, society has helped there too.

But, rest assured, I'm never completely alone, because Jesus is always with me.

Thanks again, Have a great hunt!
